  • Is It Possible To Click On Timeline And Have The Program Window Activate?

Posted by Jona Taylor on January 31, 2014 at 1:49 pm

    Hello Folks,

Is there a setting to make it possible to click on timeline and have the program window activate like FCP7 does?

    Big thanks 🙂

    Hi Jona –

I’m not an FCP7 user, but do you know about the ability to turn on FCP7 keyboard mapping. This will give you the shortcuts you’re used to, although I don’t know about the specific one you’re asking about. Here’s a good thread on it:

And here’s how to switch on those shortcut keys:

    Hi Jona,
What are you trying to achieve by having the Program monitor selected concurrently with the Timeline panel?

    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,
    Thanks for jumping in 🙂
When I drag a clip from a bin or source window to the timeline, it would be nice to not have to click the program window to see the clip that is now on the timeline. It would be good if the program window became active like in FCP. Saves me having to curser up to the program window and click it.
    I hope this makes sense.

If you drag and drop the clip (drop to overwrite, cmd drop to insert) in the Program monitor it will display the clip you just added.

Sorry folks, let me try asking this another way:

Is there a way so that when I click into the timeline panel, the program panel becomes active if I am still viewing in the source panel?

Is there any way to be more clear than this?

    Hi Paul,
Sorry for the confusion, I really really appreciate the help here 🙂
I haven’t used FCP7 for quite some time now but one of the thing I remember happening is when I would drag a clip out of the source window to the timeline, it would instantly appear in the program window. Also, if I was say in a bin containing some clips and then moved my curser to the timeline and clicked into the timeline it would automatically enable the program so I could just scroll through some clips on the timeline without having to ‘click’ into the program window to see what I was doing on the timeline. Ya know? It seems like Premier Pro does not work like this.
Thank you again for trying to lend a hand here 🙂

    OK. Mac or PC?

Pretty sure I get what you’re asking for. I can only speak for the mac side though. So, the first thing you want to do is Gang Source and Program Monitor. You can set this through the flyout menu on either the Source or Program monitor.

Move your cursor over a Monitor window (no clicking required) and use a two-finger scroll to the right or left on the trackpad (laptop or magic trackpad desktop version) to move through the footage or along the timeline. With the Apple mouse you get the same effect with a single-finger scroll across the top of the mouse.
