is data transfer from HVX200 to the IPOD video possible?
Posted by Ziggy Forthesea on July 14, 2006 at 8:31 amhello from the new comer that will take the HVX200 deep sea diving.
I am still trying to figure out the work flow. since I will be shooting while diving from a boat I will need to empty the cards between dives.
I am trying to avoid the expense of a firestore drive and I wandering if data transfer from HVX200 directly to the 60GB Ipod video is possible (using the ipod purely as a firewire storage hard drive)?
thank you in advance,
for the reefs,

July 14, 2006 at 5:22 pmIf you have a computer it is as the computer can do all the necessary translation. In laymen’s terms, the iPod (or any regular firewire drive) is not smart enough to handle the data transfer. The HVX is not either. Buy or rent a P2 store or two and you should be good.

You cannot record to your iPod like you can to a firestore…you can’t use just any firewire drive to record do. The firestore is specifically designed to act as a capture device…as is the forthcoming Cineporter. They have drives and special software/hardware that allows them to interface with the camera.

July 14, 2006 at 6:31 pmHello Ziggy, What kind of housing are you using for your HVX 200. Also i thought you might like to know more about the firestore being used in an underwater housing,it overheats after 25 minutes. Read about my experiences with it underwater in the Sept. issue of Studio Monthly Magazine. Good luck Stuart Cummings Watermark Productions

July 14, 2006 at 8:38 pmAloha Stuart,
I just purchased the Gates housing and I am taking it for a test dive momentarily.
There is no room in the housing for a firestore so I figured that I will have to download all the footage between dives to an external unit.
I’ve been told that toward the end of the year Panasonic will come out with larger cards (16Gb & 32Gb) so that will solve the problem.
what kind of housing were you using and are you happy with it?

July 14, 2006 at 10:23 pmWhen you get some underwater shots can you post them on this site? I too am looking into buy an underwater housing and I was wondering how the images look. I know underwater shotss can be darker and shots with my HVX can be a little grainy in dark areas.
Thanks.

July 14, 2006 at 10:34 pmI just got back from a dive with the housing without a camera, a test drive to make sure there are no leaks.
the ocean got a little rough. As soon as I manage to go down again I will be happy to post some images.
any suggestions on how to post them here?

July 14, 2006 at 11:37 pmHi Neil, Contact my long time friend Mike Hastings at Aquavideo.com or call him at 954-937-6600 please tell him Stuart sent you. Mike has been making housings for 25 years. The Equinox is basicly a not as nice copy (my opinion) of the Aquavideo Housing. I did a lot of the R&D testing of the first HVX200 housings Mike built back as early as Feb. I think at the time it was some of the first U/W Video shot with an HVX200!! Regards Stuart, P.S. Make sure you tell him i sent you and i am sure he will cut you a better deal than what equinox is charging.
