Is AVI 64 bit on Win 7 ?

It is my understanding that AVI was last updated in 1947…

Cutting on both PCs and MAC, I have seen very little difference. Even on a PC I export Animation since the majority of cutters want QT files, the size is also significantly smaller.

Ha ha. If that is the case I would stick with QT DNxHD since for mastering since it is the defacto standard on the PC (since Prores is not readily available for mastering).

The problem is that Quicktime files must be encoded in premiere using Quicktime the program, which is 32bit.

AVI files, on the other hand, are encoded by Premiere/AME directly.

The 32/64 bit question doesn’t affect the files themselves, just the programs encoding them.

That said, Vince is right… AVI is terribly old and doesn’t really support any useful modern codecs, so I don’t quite know why you’d use it anyway.

I master to DNxHD or Avid 1×1.

AVI wraps CineForm.

I’m currently using a hybrid approach to intermediates; for movies, I write CineForm AVIs on the PC and write ProRes QuickTimes on the Mac. These intermediates are easily read on either platform. (I also do a lot of work with image sequences, and so I’m sometimes able to avoid this problem altogether.)

I had hoped to have time this week to do some rigorous testing of Grass Valley’s new cross-platform HQX codec, but work got in the way. I will hopefully have some results to share next week.

Walter, I installed the GV codec (HQX) on my PC today. A rocky start at best. After installing I rebooted and looked for codec in PrP. AE and AME. It was nowhere to be found. I did a very detailed search under every possible option, so unless Im as blind as a bat, something is not kosher here.

I can’t seem to use it as a custom sequence codec in Premiere, but I can export to it from Ae, Pr, and AME if I select AVI as the format, then select Canopus HQX as the codec:

Ah yes, I was looking for Edius or GV but not Canopus. Not having access to it in Premiere is surprising.

And is having to have AVI as the wrapper a limitation in any way?

Drop down the Video Codec, there you will find it.
