  • Interlacing/Combing Effect Issues in SD conversion from HD 5D footage

Posted by Joanne Cheong on June 24, 2010 at 3:57 pm

    Hi all,

I’ve been trying to solve this issue for days. I have footage shot on the 5D which I’ve converted from H.264 (shot @ 25fps) to Apple Pro Res using the 5DtoFCP free plugin. This gave me a 1080p Apple Pro Res which I then edit in a its native sequence settings on the timeline in FCP. It looks fine when I see it in my monitor it while editing and looks really good when I see it in Quicktime.

But once I convert it to Apple Pro Res SD resolution via Compressor and bring into FCP put it in its native format timeline, I have the combing and jagged edges effect happening. It seems to happen in shots with movement, and looks the worse on a WS with walking.

What have I done wrong? Can anybody pls advise?
I have stupidly deleted the THM files and can’t try log and transfer. I have also tried the 5DtoFCP plugin to convert to SD using their SD specific droplet as well as MPEG Streamclip. Pls help!

If more info is needed to get my problem solve pls do ask.

    Hi Joanne,
In Compressor you need to set the “Control Frame ON” and in Output Fields: “Same as source”.
Set the Resize Filter BEST or BETTER.
    Cheers,

    Joanne,

It seems very evident to me that the step you mention above in Compressor (or one before possibly) is taking your beautiful pristine progressive footage and changing it to interlaced footage.

However, that’s really jumping the gun, because you never stated what you ultimate goal is for all of these various conversions. I certainly understand that the 5D footage has to be converted to an editing format, but please state precisely exactly what the purpose is for the SD conversion.

    Hi David,

Thanks for asking about my delivery. I meant to put it in but forgot. I’m down converting to SD because I need to lay it off to tape on digi beta. Will really appreciate it if you can give me a step by step of what I did to do.

    Thanks

    Hi Rafael,
I’ve done as you suggested but it’s still not working. I see those awful jagged edges in my apple pro res timeline.

If you are laying off to tape from “print to tape” in FCP there is no need to downres. You are, needlessly, going to lose resolution. The down conversion is best done with your AJA or Blackmagic card.

    Hi Kris,

The system I have has a blackmagic decklink studio capture card but I’m not sure what settings I shld b using or changing. I’ve tried to lay off to tape using edit to tape but seems like the tech guys are telling me it’s not possible. Unfortunately, my knowledge ends at just how to utilize fcp and not the set up. I’ve gone into system preferences to see if there’s a setting I can change like in Kona but I’m not sure what options I shld b choosing. Anything to point me in the right direction will b great.

    Thanks

With the 5DtoFCP compressor presets, there are timelines supplied that will match the output of compressor perfectly.

Use the HD to SD version – I made it especially for converting finished 5D HD ProRes timelines into SD for broadcast use. Also make sure you are looking at an external monitor or have the canvas set to 100% otherwise you will not see the second field and the resolution will be halved
