Ok, this is probably more my issue than the software, but after a few days of staring at the Log/Capture window I know what’s top of my list to be “fixed” in the next release of FCP. It’s a really small thing — like walking around with a pebble in your shoe, but it just seems like a major PITA factor when I’m capturing. The issue is that window has 2 panes — but you can’t tell at a glance which one’s active. I can’t tell you how many i’s or o’s appear in my clip’s description box, or how many wasted j’s and l’s (usually 3-4 in a row) find their way into that description space while I’m muttering to myself about why the deck’s not shuttling like I thought it should. I just hope there’s not a limited supply of those letters in the universe.

There, I’ve got it off my chest — therapy, catharsis, purging — whatever… And now back to capturing. If you’re carrying around FCP baggage you’d like to unload I’m sure Dr.Cow is listening.

If only I could hear the scrubbed audio whilst trimming on the timeline!

There are probably a hundred “pebbles in the shoe”, and there have been several threads that attempted to solicit/compile them all. Don’t hold your breath for a “fix” though… The software is really, really good, but it could be really, really better.

This is not a bug, you just have to make a habit of clicking out of that window before you start hitting the keyboard.

    Have a wonderful day.

Habit Schmabit!!! Come on, tell the truth — I bet youv’e had some i’s, o’s, J’s and l’s show up in your descriptions from time to time 🙂 It’s not a bug per se, just annoying and if the software genie gave me one wish for FCP, that’s what I’d change…

Long time reader, first time poster:

It’s not just an FCP issue – it happens to me all the time in Avid too. I’m trying to control the deck from the keyboard, but all I see in the clip name field is a bunch of jjjjjkkkkklllll. It’s a pain to remember to click in the machine control section of the window, but it’s still easier than using the shuttle/jog controls with the mouse.

Just gotta remember to do it, is all.

Oh, man. I would take timecode and maybe some audio meters and the like when laying off to tape over this any day. I can handle some ‘i’s and ‘o’s in my descriptions, since normally i’m given bins from Avid MediaLog anyway. But it is what it is, the key is to learn to work with what we’ve got. And what we’ve got is something that can definitely be worked with, if you’ve got the patience and open a couple of books first. I’m hoping for some huge changes come Snow Leopard, but who knows… right now they’re just one more for the rumor mill.

    Craig –

If this is your biggest complaint with FCP then you are living a charmed life.

As a matter of fact, it has happened to me many times, but not lately, as it forced me to the “habit schmabit” you spoke of, and I wasn’t trying to be a dick, I was offering you a solution.

    Have a wonderful day.

Don’t get me wrong I’ll be a cheerleader for FCP all day long. It’s the bees knees for editing and I’ve used a lot of other systems that don’t come close. But like anything you love, there are a few niggles here and there. If Apple provided a visual clue showing which pane was active it’d be a godsend when I’m up editing in the middle of the night and trying to stay focused… So if I had to choose one thing, I’d go with that. I know some of you might have a pinch point that you’d wave the wand to change if you could. Share if you dare…
