This is not a noise issue with audio files or audio tracks, but with the program itself…

I get a low but noticeable hissing from my monitors when Premiere Pro CS5 is merely active (not when playing back audio, simply when the program has the focus on my computer). Sounds like a low white noise.

It goes away whenever I switch to another program or window. Again, this is not in the actual audio tracks… it comes from the program, even when not doing anything.

I have two workstations with Premiere Pro CS5 loaded and they do the same thing. Doesn’t happen with other programs. It’s prevalent when my monitors are at higher volumes, but it bugs me that it’s there, especially since it makes me second guess whether I got clean audio recordings.

    Thanks, Mike B

I assume you’re using monitors with built-in speakers so it connects with a combo of DVI and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Are you using a sound card or the motherboard’s built in sound?

Have you tried other headphones or speakers and have they exhibited the same issue?

I doubt it’s directly related to Premiere Pro, as it sounds like it might be a grounding/shielding issue with how the sound is transmitted.

No, these are professional audio monitors, not built into the displays. On one work station, I have Yorkvilles, the other KR8’s… running out of a Presonus interface and the other from a Blackmagic Decklink, respectively. All that to say, it’s the same problem across two different configurations of professional equipment.

Yes, the problem also happens with headphones. Soon as Premiere Pro is the active window, I start getting a low hiss. When I switch to another program (like a Word doc), the hiss goes away. However, the audio devices are being used system-wide, not just Premiere, so I am led to believe the hiss is caused by something within Premiere.

Definitely not a grounding issue, since that would happen regardless of me using program.

This wouldn’t be an issue, except that I can’t always tell whether there is actually noise in part of the audio file or it’s just the program.

Hope that explains my situation. Thanks for any input.

    Thanks, Mike B.

Hm, you have a professional setup indeed.

Are you running a nVidia card on each system as well? It makes me wonder if there is some RF interference between the graphics card and any cabling… but even then I suppose at least the Presonus is a little usb AudioBox (the decklink, I recall uses a breakout cable; there are so many versions of that card) so it’s a moot point.

I have Premiere on a little M-Audio box and Shure studio headphones (PC system).

Unless someone else can chime in, my next step would be using a power conditioner or ferrite cores on any analog audio cables.
