I have a still image render problem in FCP6
Posted by James Vellacott on June 17, 2008 at 10:28 amCan anyone help? I have imported standard RGB fairly low res still images into FCP 6. I have been key framing them as i have done many times before to move them around the screen then rendering them and playing them back no probs. Suddenly for no obvious reason half way through the sequence the latest pics will not play properly after render, you only see the first keyframe image then blackness then you see the last keyframed image. But before rendering they play ok. I’m using a newish Imas 3.06 GHz with 4GB 800MHz RAM. I’ve tried starting a new project with new pics and the problem seems to be erratic. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Select the clip, right click and remove attributes. Don’t select anything from the list of attributes. This should unrender the clip.bogiesan
This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

June 17, 2008 at 7:00 pmThanks for the reply, but the problem is not unrendering- i can apple z that… its for some reason the keyframing on the pic plays ok unrendered, but when it’s rendered for export , it won’t play properly (the keyframed ‘moving’ frames do not show up on the canvas). If that clip is exported to let’s say a Qt movie, the result is a sharp clear image at the start and end of the clip but the keyframed moving frames in between are faded and have faint lines through them. Also this problem appears to be erratic, I’ve imported the same photos onto the same sequence as a test and sometimes they work after render- sometimes they don’t. I’ve tried moving the render files off the capture scratch in the external drive to the main onboard drive and this doesn’t help either. I’m perplexed??

Unrendering is not the same as apple-z at all, that’s just a simple undo. Remving the attributes forces a new render to take place.
I’m puzzled by your use of the term “export.” If you render this sequence, it plays properly in the timeline? If so, export it as a self-contained movie, reimport it, export the self-contained movie as a conversion. Because the move you’re exporting is complete in every way, it should be fine when converted to any format or codec.
If the exported self-contained movie breaks up, you have truly complex issues.bogiesan

June 17, 2008 at 9:39 pmFor some reason the key-framed sequence will not play properly after rendering. Yes it should be complete after rendering but it only played correctly before render. Since our last correspondence I did a few test imports with photos and it appears that the problem may lie in the Omega 1tb 800 external HD which is the capture scratch. When the Hard drive is spinning the rendering is correct and complete. If the Imac is left for a few minutes and the external HD spins down and you try a render on the still image in the timeline, the render is not complete and the problem occurs. For now I have shut down the external HD and have reset the scratch to the internal HD…. it appears to be working at the moment. I use the same Omega 1TB in a mac pro next door and it seems to be fine there. The Imac is a new acquisition. I have only done a couple of tests so I’ll see what happens over the next couple of days.
thanks for your advice.

June 18, 2008 at 9:04 pmDear bogiesan
After removing the external Hard drive initially this seemed to solve my problem, but after a a couple of tests the problem came back. This led me to remove all the FCP studio2 software using FCS remover and then reinstalling from the original discs. After a few tests the problem still appeared to be there and was erratic.
To recap when i keyframe a low res jpg from the right of the canvas to the left, before I ‘render all’, the pic plays and moves smoothly and clearly, but after rendering- you see the first frame, and then no ‘movement frames’, and then at the last frame suddenly appears in the finishing position (what beats me is that 50% of the time it doesn’t happen- same pic, same sequence).
The mac is a brand new imac 24″ 3.04 GHz 4Gb 800MHz RAM . I originally did a migration from my old mac. but have since reinstalled FCS2. I rang the my Applecare and they said I needed to spend £600 on FCP backup care. I cannot afford that so am still looking for any kinda advice or guidance. My new business uses a lot of pics in the videos and this is a major blow for me. Any ideas? Is there anyone I can call?

I thought I should mention that I had a keyframe rendering problem with jpgs and I made them into freezeframes and worked from those instead – problem solved. -

November 15, 2009 at 5:09 pmVery similar problem happens here with still images. I ve been working on this long project for a while, timeline gets build up with video, images, effects etc. There are some keyframed images that wont playback at all when rendered. Blackness..
I ve been doing tests with a particular psd image, converted it into tiff, jpeg, deleted rendered files, repaired permissions…no luck..I dont want to trash my fcp preferences, yet..
Also issues with couple simple text clips with basic motion keyrames, will play half their duration then black..
Any ides whats going on..I ve had this in the past with another machine and fcp6, whereas problems like this start occurring once a project gets complicated..
Running FCP 6.0 on intel iMac, 4Gb RAM, media sits on external FW800 HD, render folders on main disk inside iMac.

January 4, 2010 at 3:52 pmI’m now having this problem. Did you guys figure anything out? They show up fine before I render but after I render they only play they first and last frames and everything in the middle is black.
Please post a solution if you found one.

January 13, 2011 at 5:04 amPSD render problem here too. While the timeline is parked on a non rendered PSD sequence it looks fine. After I render the sequence it becomes semi-transparent. I am trashing prefs….NOW!
