Do I need an array to capture HVD to Prores via Firewire? Will a firewire 800 drive be fast enough? The kona system test says I am getting 180 MB/s read-write speed with my current setup, will this get the job done? How much throughput do I really need?

I will update my FCP to a version that will allow Firewire to Prores soon, otherwise I could just check this myself. I can’t at this point in time, so I thought I would ask the professionals.

[Mike Allen] “Do I need an array to capture HVD to Prores via Firewire?”

    Nope.

    Yep!

Capturing HDV to ProRes via firewire is not at all throughput (hard drive) intensive, and editing ProRes was designed to make HD possible using single firewire 800 drives. So, since you’re obviously using a firewire 800 in a raided configuration you’re doing just fine.
