How to tweak CRT preview monitor to correct levels
This is my first post to the forum, and would appreciate any input
for my question. I would like to set the correct levels on my CRT
(contrast, hue, brightness,saturation,etc.) is there a standard
way to do this in Vegas? this is my preview monitor.
I have heard there is a “blue filter” that you look through to set
some of the levels.Thank you,

It depends on what you mean by “my CRT”. Are you talking about an external broadcast monitor CRT or TV that you are feeding via firewire? or are you talking about your PC monitor CRT? If it’s an external CRT there are many tutorials on the web on how to calibrate monitors. Just Google “calibrate ntsc monitor”. It is beyond a simple forum post. Yes, you will need a blue gel if your monitor doesn’t have a blue gun switch.
If you are talking about your computer CRT there is no way. Computers CRTs are not going to give you the same color space that an external monitor via firewire will and you can’t trust the colors for color correcting. In fact, you will never get the pluge adjustment right.
If you just want to make the colors on your PC display more accurate, you can buy a calibration tool like the Spyder3Pro which will calibrate your PC monitor far better than your eyes ever could.

Thank you for your prompt responses on tweaking my NTSC TV monitor,
I’ll try to be more in depth on what I have for a set up.
Yes this is a TV that is connected to the S-VHS output coming out of the the back of my editing PC.(Secondary Monitor) It is “not connected by Fire wire”.
As per your suggestions ,I’ll Google “calibrate ntsc monitor.
A friend of mine does have the Spyder3Pro, and we will definitely use that to set the PC display to the correct levels.
I pray that I’m on the right track now!!!

Blayde, Color Bars and How To Use ’em is the “proper” way to set up a monitor.
Calibration and Adjustment is an alternate method.
Pick the method that works best for you. -

Yes, I have a Spyder3Elite and I calibrate my 2 LCD monitors every month. I love it! I could have gone with the less expensive Spyder3Pro but didn’t realize the difference until after I bought it. They both use the same instrument. The Elite software just has more options that I don’t even use.

Glad you explained that. Unless you are specifically using a hardware card designed for this like an Aja card, you will not get an accurate representation that way. The S-Video out of your video card treats the TV like another PC monitor. The only way to get an accurate representation for DV with Vegas is to use firewire. Vegas sends the actual DV signal (as if it’s printing to tape) out the firewire. For HD you can use an LCD secondary display.

Thanks Mike for pointing me in the right direction on setting
levels on my monitor, it did take a while to digest the info
that you had given me. I must say ,it took longer to read the
instructions than it did to actually do the tweaking.

John,if I understand you correctly,the only truly “accurate”monitor setup for Vegas is one that is linked by firewire?
And are these monitors usually LCD monitors? not CRT’s.
I guess I’m trying to keep my CRT monitor for cost reasons.
You mentioned that also I would need firewire out. My PC
does have 2 firewire ports,would this support the type of
monitor set up you are talking about?

For SD DV that is true. Firewire or a card like the Aja Card that Vegas also supports for external preview. The Aja cards are also good for HD as well. (there is no HD via firewire though) HD can also use the Windows Secondary Display.

For DV I would use a broadcast CRT monitor. For HD I would use LCD.

Yes, you would also need a Digital to Analog Converter like the Canopus ADVC-110, 300 or the ADS Tech A/V Link, or any DV Deck. Even an old DV camera with passthough.
