  • How to get the “Capture Video” option to show DV or HDV

Posted by Ever Giron on June 14, 2011 at 2:10 am

Since I have being working with HD cameras I changed the option you get when going to Capture Video that shows DV or HDV. I checked the box “start all capturing with this option” (which was HDV). Now that I’m trying to capture from a standard def camera Vegas does not recognize it. But now I have no idea how to get Vegas to give me the option to capture DV instead of HDV.
    I have Vegas Pro 10.0d.

    Thank you.

Simply go to Preferences, and under the Video tab,
    select your external video capture.

I don’t understand your answer Steve. That’s where you select your default video capture program. After reading his post, I selected HDV and checked always use this, and I can’t get the option to capture DV or HDV back either. I tried holding down cntl and shift while launching Vegas but the capture option for DV or HDV won’t show up still. I searched the help file and this forum and can’t find how to get that option back. Now I’m really curious. 😉

Ever, for now you can use other capture apps to switch between DV and HDV. Here’s some good info I found on one of Steve Manns post.
For capturing DV tape, I always use scenalyzer live (https://www.scenalyzer.com/)
For HDV tape I use HDV Split (https://www.videohelp.com/tools/HDVSplit).

At least until someone can figure this out, short of reloading Vegas.

Thank you guys, I finally got the program to at least show me the DV capture window. It does not give me the 2 options of “DV or HDV” but I was able to capture with the DV only window. Since I use a Canon 5D for HD recording I don’t actually need the HDV capture window. The way I got it to work was by going to preferences and clicking on “default all”.

Ever/Danny, the red highlighted area is the option Steve is referring to.
Once you’ve clicked the “always use this option” in the capture window, enabling/disabling “Use external video capture application” is the only way to switch between HDV and DV capture.

Thanks for your responce Mike. I don’t have a DV camera anymore and my HVR-A1 is out for a second repair they didn’t fix it the first time, so I don’t have any firewire cameras to test with. For Evers sake, how do you switch once you’ve checked the “Always use the selected format” box?
Here’s the window we’re talking about that doesn’t show up after checking this?

Danny, you’re correct in saying that box will longer show up once you’ve permanently selected one mode for capture.
That’s why selecting or deselecting the Use external video capture application option is now the only way to switch between the two different capture modes.
Selecting it gives you DV capture and deselecting it gives you HDV/SDI capture.

    Wouldn’t a shift-start reset fix this?

Thanks Mike for clarifying my earlier suggestion:
You wont get back that pop up boxed option, but you
can easily make your choice in Preferences.

    My pleasure Steve.
Sometimes a picture is worth 100 words and I didn’t want you to type that much 🙂
