thanks Richard, ok I saved the help menu to desktop. ( I tried to learn FCP2 years ago with Tom’s outstanding book, but bailed on it as a photographer it was too much to learn 2 complex software at once — PHotoshop and FCP), so I decided to hire an editor to edit, and now I only use software to capture and other odd things. But I’ll pick up Tom’s FCE book… but anyway, for sequence, the frame size is 1440x 1080, vid rate, 25 fps, audio rate 48, format 32 bit. For clip received from editor it’s 720 x 420, 29.97, 22.1 audio rate, 16 bit, and square pixel aspect.

I guess ? this is becuase I capture in HD (for furture possible needs), but then the editor edits for standard def for current needs?

Any, so that means I have sequence settings for HD for future needs while I capture, but when I get these clips back, I should change sequece settings for standard def? Can one do that, like save presents for the sequece settings, so one can swith back and forth on that? Photoshop style?

(my guess is no — as sequence setting don’t even show a way to change any of this, has only tabs for timeline options and render control)

If you change the preset and then make a new sequence it will be in the new preset format.

    All the best,

I delete the sequence out, and then I lose the timeline. I go windows arrange standard, but that does not work. so I quit and relaunch. Why time line have to disappear?

I tried a lot of different easy set ups Tom, but still get red bar. appreciate your patience.

Make a new sequence that matches your media item properties. What exactly are the item properties? You really need to learn a little about the application, and you can’t do it very well from a forum.

Yeah, this should be so easy, it should be right in front of my face, “change item properties” or change sequence properties. I can’t find it.

Ok, sequece “item properties” just based on putting ntsc in easy set up is:

    And for the clip

So it’s the audio that needs to be rendered not the video. Do you see that in the timeline? The audio sample rates don’t match. Where did this video some from? newsizetest.mov? It’s not in standard format. It uses the audio CD sample rate rather than one of the digital video sample rates.

No, dont see it in the timeline:

But I do see in it item properties.
Of couse I see video stuff that does not match either, like sizes, so I thougt it was video.

It was shot on Sony HDR-HC3. Then captured into FCE, then given to my editor, who then e mailed it back as a test. Did he change it to CD sample rate? wonder why. I think he is working on outputting to web if that explains anything.

Anyway, bottom line is if I get red bar, I just have to render it, probably less of hassle than changing things otherwise?

Your image only shows the audio portion of the timeline and it shows the clip selected. The bar at the top portion of the audio indicates it’s wrong. Also the pixel aspect ratio of the video is incorrect. The test that was sent back to you is not suitable for video editing with FCE. It’s in a non-standard format.

I have no idea what’s going on, just that it’s wrong.

    Thanks Tom:
Curious , can it be edited in FCP?

How do you define what a standard format is and why is this not a standard format. All I get for “standard format” in Help is something about AVI.

    Not properly.

You can’t just make up a frame size and aspect ratio and sample rate. There are specifications for video. Try google. There is lots of technical information available online on video formats.
