How can I record dialogue without the sound of the motorized slider picking up?
Posted by Ryan Elder on November 27, 2018 at 12:33 amI am doing production audio for someone’s movie right now and I am worried about the motor from the slider being picked up by the mic. I was doing one scene so far, and although the specific shot didn’t require sound, I could still hear it in the headphones through the mic.
Now I am worried about the next shoots where dialogue is required while the slider is moving on the motor. Any ideas on if I can do anything to block it out?

What’s a slider?
Where are your mics?

A slider is a device that moves the camera along rails. Some like this one, have motors on to make them move more fluently at the same fixed speed.
The mic is aimed at the actors mouths, on a boom about 1-2 feet away, depending on the shot.

OK, I thought so, but didn’t know for sure.
That can be a problem if the slider is too noisy and/or too close.
What mic? Inside or out?
Can you lubricate the track?

November 27, 2018 at 2:23 amI’m not really in charge of what goes on with the track but I can ask them. Normally it’s not suppose to be lubricated though. But even if they could lubricate it, the motor is the thing that is making the noise, so wouldn’t a motor still make noise if a track is lubricated or not? Kind of like a car engine will still make noise even if the car is lifted off the ground sort of thing?
But I can ask. When you say inside or out mic, do you mean indoors or outdoors? I have a shotgun and a hypercardioid if that helps. So far I am using the hyper indoors but I assume the hyper would pick it up a little more even, cause of wall reflections.

November 27, 2018 at 2:43 amHere is an example of a motorized slider in this video:

It doesn’t make much noise in the video though, but maybe the guy’s voice just covers it up?

The technology has been used in film and TV for some time.
Obviously, how not to make noise an issue has been solved.
The video does suggest that audio is double recorded so an audio cable is not required to be connected to the camera, while “the good audio” is recorded on a separate mixer/recorder.

November 27, 2018 at 10:12 pmOh okay thanks, but we are already double recording already, with the good audio on a separate field recorder.
