Home movies preserved for the future
I have analog VHS, HI 8, and digital mini-DV tapes that I fear
need to go to the next generation format before the current
formats are sent to the gallows. Will Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5
transfer an AVI format to DVD, so that the video may be edited
in the future? Are there reasonably priced external DVD burn-
ers that will record AVI files (if that is the way to go)?
I need some advice from someone on the cutting edge of the
digital march into the future.

If you want to store AVI on a dvd as data it will take 3 sl disks for an hour, if you encode to mpeg2 you can put an hour of high quality dvd compliant mpeg on a sl disk, if you want to keep as AVI you can use a harddrive to store archives a 500gig drive will hold about 35hrs of video.

Another question…actually, the reason for the first question. Adobe Pro 1.5 doesn’t like MPEG files, and I was
worried about future editing from MPEG files. I haven’t tried
this, but if an MPEG file is recorded again on VHS tape as an
analog file then re-digitized into ADOBE, does it go in as an
AVI file with minimal loss?

If you go from VHS to Mpeg there is going to a bit of loss due to conversion and compression, if you try to go back the other way, Mpeg to VHS its going to get worst, if you want to archive to mpeg you need to use an editor thats more Mpeg friendly possibly with smart rendering to minumize re-compression, and stay away from analog once digitized.
