HELP PLEASE!! FCP .mov will not play on PC

What format are you using to edit in FCP?

Depending on the format, some of those codecs only come with FCP.

However if you use ProRes then you can download that codec for windows.

Do a search on the cow and you will find a link for the ProRes codec for windows.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

What it/How does ProRes work? This something I set in FCP before importing my Canon XH-A1(HDV) footage?

Hi Jeremy,
Forget about H264. That’s a delivery format.
Transcode your HDV to Proress. You can do it with the Media Manager, Batch Export, Compressor or MPGStreamclip.
To open the files in a PC you only need the free Proress reader for Window.

I couldn’t export my footage differently without using FCP’s .mov(I just don’t want to lose quality)

I guess now I should just ask, what is the best way of exporting my HDV footage with FCP so that I can play/edit with my pc(AEcs3)?

Ok, I will go the ProRes route after all. What is a step by step process? I use Compressor.

For footage that I have already captured/edited in HDV I need to..

Use compressor and select..?

For future use, I need to capture my hdv footage in FCP by…

Audio/video settings

Sequence Presest: ?????

Capture Preset: HDV – Apple ProRes 422 (HQ or No HQ?)

Device control Preset: HDV FireWire Basic NDF ?

…Then edit my footage, and EXPORT to???

The Apple HDV codec only comes with FCP. Any machine without FCP, even Macs, cannot view HDV captured footage. It shows up as white and they get a CODEC error. PCs cannot see this format either.

GIve them the master tapes and have them capture them. Into the format they can work with.

ProRes…as mentioned. And they will need the decoder. Otherwise give them the tapes. Capturing on one edit system for another is unwise, especially if you are going across computing platforms.

Or just buy the XD Decode component from Calibrated Software … will let your PC read and use your mac captured HDV files.

It’s available for Mac OS X system’s that don’t have FCP, and/or for Windows XP or Vista systems … and it works a treat.

Thanks Andy. That seemed to work. BUT is it because it’s the demo that I am getting a big grey rectangle over my footage? How much is the full version?

Yep.. thats the demo watermark … IIRC only half the image is displayed with a grid over the other half.
The demo is fine for checking that your system will recognise and work correctly with the plugin but you’ll need the full version to use it properly. It costs $80 (USD).
