HELP I’M DESPERATE!!! Any way to export 10bit in fcp5.1?
Posted by Marco Piana on April 5, 2008 at 7:14 amHi, I need to deliver a 10bit 4:4:4 out of fcp 5.1.4 and I don’t know what to do…
The source files are a mix of 16bit dpx (the cgi) and 10bit sheer 10bit rgb (the 2k scan)…
I have no transitions nor fade and I can render all the retimes in shake. I just have a lots of upsize effect and recrop.
Please help with an effective workflow to render out a 10-bit (or 16) file to bring to CC… I’m in a rush and I’d really appreciate help… Consider also that Aja is not an option because is not compatible with sheer (meaning they can’t stay in the same library otherwise sheer won’t decode)…
What if I export with blackmagic codec 10bit rgb? Will it be real 10bit or just in size but not in content?
Then I could convert with shake the blackmagic to dpx….
Please heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllpppppp🙂

April 6, 2008 at 7:17 amWell, because compressor 2 doesn’t output 10bit rgb but only 8bit and I need a 10bit output 4:4:4. Even if shows 10bit is fake 10bit but 8bit….
Need help…. -

there is no preset for 10bit 4:4:4 — but compressor can do it, so can shake.
why not just use DPX files for the CC?

April 6, 2008 at 4:26 pmYes that’s what I’d need, dpx.
The problem is that gluetools 2.5 cannot export from compressor 2 but only via quicktime conversion.
So my idea was to export in some 10bit rgb format out of compressor 2 and then convert and keep in in dpx.
On my timeline I do have 2 retime on two clips, many upsize and some reframe. I’ve read on the forum that if there is any of those on the timeline compressor will export the whole thing in 8bit. Then they told me that the only way to sort out a 10 bit that include what I have on the timeline would be export a 10-bit aja rgb and then convert it to dpx.
Now due to the fact that the material on the timeline is half dpx (material from the cgi) and half sheer 10-bit rgb (material from the scan) I couldn’t do it. When Aja is present, final cut pro doesn’t decode anymore sheer 10bitrgb…
I had the idea of exporting tiff sequence and then convert it to dpx or blackmagic rgb 10bit but are they gonna be real 10bit or 8bit “outdressed” as 10bit? -

Why don’t you make a custom FCP sequence that uses the Sheer codec. Set video rendering to RGB. Then you can “Export Quicktime Movie” and it won’t re-render anything.
Wouldn’t that work?

I must say, you’re proclaiming a lot of things I never knew about that are troubling to hear:
1) Compressor doesn’t process in 10-bit color, even when it says it does.
2). AJA codecs can not co-exist with Sheer codecs.
3). “Export using Quicktime conversion” will not process in 10-bit.
Could you explain where you got this information. This is important to know if it’s true or not. Thanks.
Also, why do you feel you need to use Compressor instead of “Quicktime Conversion”?

April 7, 2008 at 2:05 pm1)compressor does not process 10-bit rgb if filters are included in the clips on the fcp timeline (I think is due to the fact that fcp has 8-bit filters). Now the question is does that happen also when we talk about “motion” (meaning de-center the frame or retime without blending)?
2) fcp does not decode sheervideo rgb 10-bit clips on the timeline if aja codec are installed in the quicktime library.
It shows nothing: why? I don’t know but it does it… try…
3)Quicktime conversion is ONLY 8 bit because is a 8-bit engine.
otherwise I wouldn’t have all this issues… I discovered it because Bob at gluetools told me that if I exported my movie in dpx using quicktime conversion it was going to be 8 bit even if recorded at 16 bit. I tried at shake tells me that it’s 16 bit but if bob tells me that it’s a fake 8 bit I have tendence to believe to the gluetools builder…So now I’m still at point 1.
Bob is building new version 3 that only works on compressor 3, that should export 16bit… but for the moment we are having a lot of crashes…
Let’s hope because we need to deliver…
