April 7, 2008 at 5:41 pmUse the Blackmagic codec in Final Cut and “Export to Quicktime Movie” which does not re-render anything. You can use Blackmagic Framelink instead of GlueTools to convert to and from DPX files.

Effect Handling for the Blackmagic 4:4:4 codec may need to be set for Decklink instead of Final Cut – which obviously won’t work if you don’t have the card.
This is all very interesting. I had no idea Final Cut Studio apps didn’t render in 10-bit. Maybe you should just resize in After Effects or Shake. That said, I would be shocked if Motion did not handle 10-bit properly.

April 7, 2008 at 7:36 pmWell sorry to shock you but also motion is a 8-bit rgb.
Only shake can render out 10-bit up…
Fcp motion etc are quicktime wrappers…
Only 10 bit yuv (so 4:2:2 which for video is good but poor solution if to go back to film)…
The only idea would be aja (which fake store RGB data through a YUV wrapper, accordingly FCP is able to render them in high precision)…
I’m currently in contact with sheervideo almost in real time…
I just had an idea… -

April 7, 2008 at 7:46 pmI found this interesting article:
https://www.coremelt.com/support/workflow/codec-and-effects-limitations-for-10-bit-online-workflow-with-final-cut-pro-6.0.2.htmlLooks like you can use the Cineform codec. It disguises RGB into a YUV wrapper just like the AJA codec.

April 7, 2008 at 7:56 pmYup I did read the article…
The idea is to stay in uncompressed being this the final render in dpx to bring to the cc facility for qantel.
So I do have the glue tools kit on both of our editing machines.
But machine who has fcp 6.0.2, the one who can export dpx 16-bit doesn’t decode the codec sheer 10rgb (which is the codec of the scan, strange eh…).
Actually it does decode it when we click on the fcp browser but when we put it on the timeline it doesn’t decode it anymore…
The funny part of the story is that NO ONE at apple store or apple online tech service for fcp knew any of this… -

April 7, 2008 at 8:24 pmThis is really something. Any Quicktime app cannot render RGB at anything other than 8-bit.
Maybe you’ll have to use Windows. Is there a way to re-wrap your Sheer Quicktime files into Sheer AVI files without any re-encoding? I know there used to be tools that could do this for DV codecs.
Take a look at this:
https://www.cineform.com/products/TechNotes/Red-Prospect4K.htmDown the page, it includes a tool to re-wrap MOV to AVI. There’s a strong chance this could work with the Sheer codec as well. Then you could use CS3 on Windows (AE or Premiere), or you could convert it to Cineform and then wrap it back to MOV and get 4:4:4 in Final Cut.
