At the moment Julie, with Premiere Pro and Decklink, you are best to capture from a standard SDI-equipped DVCPRO50 VTR. The pictures look fantastic and will endure image manipulation, rendering and colour correction very nicely. If you have your heart set on firewire, FCP would be a better solution now. (did I really say that?)

I’m guessing the VTR somehow “hooks” into the DV50 codec built into WIN XP SP2 and the setting magically appears as a project/codec/resolution setting in PPRO?
That kind of begs the question…what is the DV50 codec PPRO plug-in from Main Concept used for? Maybe for transcoding from uncompressed to DV50?

No, it’s nothing to do with Pro50 codecs once it hits the PC. It is trancoded into the Blackmagic 10-bit or 8-bit uncompressed codec. Once it leaves the Pro50 VTR via SDI, it ain’t Pro50 anymore, it’s an uncompressed video stream.

Yes, I understand that part. DV50 on tape is transferred from VTR over SDI as uncompressed.
But I also asked:
“Is it possible to capture DV50 over firewire in PPRO?”
and you replied:
“Yes, with the latest VTR’s.”
So what is coming over firewire? Is it DV50 or uncompressed?

Looking at the specs on the Panasonic VTR’s, it would appear that only DVCPRO and DV ar supported via firewire.

I used to be real keen on editing in Pro50 (mainly because of disk space considerations, but I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s better to work in SDI. There was a thread on the FCP forum where an A/B test was done and and this was shown to be the case, but it’s horses for courses I suppose.Peter Corbett

DVCPro 50 can be captured via firewire in the newer Panasonic deck with some editing applications. I think Avid and FCP are all for the moment…maybe Axio will I’m not sure.
I wish someone would provide native DVCPro50 support in Premiere. It is a shame to use 3x the disk space for uncompressed footage.
