I switched to PPro after eight years of edit. I just got sick of Windows NT and the lack of export variety, 10-bit and MPEG2 quality. What you do get with Premeiere is access to loads of plugins for great grading and effects, intergration with other Adobe products like Photoshop and the ability to use XP products and to export to ANYTHING.
You lose a faster editing workflow with moving from edit. You lose simplicity. You have to render everything (there are RT dissolves with Decklink). But that is not all a bad thing. You get a product that whilst imperfect is developing and will only improve.
And you don’t have to buy a Mac :0)

Are you using the Main Concept DV50 codec plug-in or a codec included with the Decklink software? Is it possible to capture DV50 over firewire in PPRO?

May 16, 2005 at 8:01 pmThe decklink uses its own codec. You have to render any other clips that are in another codec. Clips in their codec don’t have to be rendered.

I’m not sure I understand. Peter said “I use the SDI-only Decklink with DVCPRO50.”
Is he capturing in uncompressed then converting to dv50 or capturing to dv50 directly over SDI? Also, is it possible to capture DV50 into PPRO over firewire as its done in FCP? Does the Main Concept plug-in work for this? Or is it done some other way?

May 16, 2005 at 10:13 pmCapturing DVCPRO50 is not a DeckLink issue. I know of some people using the “decklink deck control” application to capture & dump clips, and have PPro in DV-mode projects. You cannot capture SDI from within PPro when you are in a DV project. BMD has promised the decklink will work with a DV project but right now this is something that is not supported.

May 16, 2005 at 10:35 pmI capture via the SDI output of the D960 VTR with 10-bit or 8-bit uncompressed into Decklink Premiere. I haven’t got firewire out of the Pro50 so I can’t use the DVCPRO50 codec. I’ve read that you get better results if you start with uncompressed then native codecs once you start rendering and compositing. Quality is great and you don’t need to render BM files to play them.

I thought that was the case…that capturing dv50 is not possible with the Decklink.
I still would like to know how DV50 is handled in PPRO. I’ve read that WIN XP SP2 has the DV50 codec and Main Concept has a DV50 plugin for PPRO. Also Peter has mentioned using DV50. But I have never heard how DV50 is used in PPRO. Does DV50 need to be transcoded from another file format? Can DV50 be captured natively over firewire as it can with FCP?
Please explain how.
