H264 to Proress422(HQ) Final Cut Pro 7 without Log/Transfer
Will try to make it short.
Shot a feature film on Canon 5D. Converted to Prores Proxy and edited. Finishing film and tried to use Log/Transfer to upres to Prores422 (HQ). No luck. Searched forums and for many technical reasons I believe I will not get the Log/Transfer function to work. Horrible but…I seemed to have found a solution but it is something I have not seen on threads and I feel I maybe missing something.
If I bring the prores FCP project file onto my Macbook pro and open it without the prores proxy drive attached to the Macbook FCP of course asks to reconnect the media. If I connect the h264 drive (camera original files) and point FCP to reconnect the media in the sequence to the h264 files it reconnects the files almost perfectly in the Sequence. I then simply changed the sequence setting from Prores Proxy to H264 in FCP and it seems then I have a h264 Sequence of my picture lock sequence.
Now if I export a 422(HQ) movie from this H264 sequence timeline it would seem then I have solved the problem and have a prores 422(HQ) movie. It seems simple, to simple and I have not heard of this process before. Since the project is heading for festivals, I of course want to try to keep as much of the original quality as possible.
Am I missing something?
Also as another option I may have found…I was able to export an XML after creating the H264 Sequence to Adobe Premire and also open it up using the H264 files. Is this a better option? I hear a lot that it is since Adobe is 32bit? This is pushing limits of my knowledge.
I’d ideally just like to stay in Final Cut as I am familiar with the program but if there is a really big difference, which I’m guessing there not, I’d try to maybe take the leap into Premiere.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Chanho
