Graphics Slot Use-FCPX
Need help from all you graphics card gurus. I bought a ATI Radeon HD 7970 for use with FCPX in a Mid 2010 Mac tower. I also have the stock ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB. The 7970 failed on my after two months. Lemon past the warranty period. It works for a time if installed and it may be the power requirements and slot I’m putting it in. I can’t afford another lemon card and I won’t be budgeting a matching 5770 until next year. Here are my questions:
1. Can I mix the 7970 with the 5770 if the power requirements are met in order to get benefits with FCPX? I did try it and it blazed but of course the screen flickers and color pop occurred.
2. If the power requirements are met perfectly what is the downside of mixing graphic cards for FCPX, After Effects, Motion, etc.
3. Is anyone using a mixed graphic card setup now is an equivalent apple computer? If so, what are your reviews, concerns, etc.?
4. If I do start over with graphic cards should I seek ATI, AMD or Nvidia, and what specific models meet or exceed FCPX requirements?
5. What slot should graphics cards be put in; 16x 4x?

I´m assuming FCPX will only benefit from the card that is running the GUI. So you should get rid of the 5770, since this is not resolve (resolve will benefit from a high-end GPU alongside a weaker GUI card)
However, I never tested that. But since you have a power-problem, thats another reason to trash the 5770. You should put the 7970 in to the 16x slot.
I guess it will run quite good with FCPX – However: Why didn´t you ask before you bought it? -
I actually did a lot of research on the AMD 7970 and its Sapphire equivalent. The Mid 2010 has the power inputs to handle the 7970 but if I want to of them then I’ll need to remove both optical drives and buy some splitters and go that route or buy another power supply and run cables through pcie slot openings. I was really experimenting with different cards and took some gambles mixing the 5770 with the 7970. If I decide to get another 7970 I’ll wait until next year. Price should drop quite a bit so I can get one plus a power supply. I need this Mid 2010 to go for another two years or so and then jump to a new iMac or Darth Vader Mac Pro.
