Grabbing 24p directly from Varicam
Posted by Francois Driessen on November 4, 2005 at 10:53 pmI’m wondering if I’m missing something in setting the Kona2 up to grap actaul 24p from the 60p player of a Varicam?
As I understand, the Varicam always records at 60p no matter what you’re shooting at, but that that the dupe frames are marked and then discarded when captured. However, if I capture shot 24p from the Varicam at the 720p24 setting, the video jerks up. Capturing at 720p60 works fine. Also, I can only import what I captured into a 60p sequence in FCP. Is it actually possible to capture actual 24p direct from the Varicam? Anyone have an easy answer?

November 5, 2005 at 12:45 pmFor us the 24p presets work just fine, if the video was actually shot in 24p.
From what you have reported it sounds like you have the wrong sequence and capture settings.
We have issues with the 60p clips and FCP reporting them as subclips.

November 5, 2005 at 4:05 pmYea. Maybe I’m just a bit dim. But I have played around with the capture settings.
Have you personally captured successfully directly from a Varicam using 24p? Or did you capture from a Deck?

Sorry, no we do not capture from the cammera.
We only use the 1200a for capture.

November 7, 2005 at 3:32 pmThat brings me back to my first question:
Is it possible to capture actual 24p directly from a Varicam (not a deck)? Anyone out there in the heard knows the answer?

Yes with the proper hardware,
I have done this from both the K2 and over this past weekend with a Kona LH.
The setting are the same as if your were trying to capture thru the kona from the deck, this is also the way to capture Uncompressed 10bit direct from the camera for compositing when you do not have access to a D5 deck.Gary Adcock

November 7, 2005 at 7:41 pmlet me add that there needs to be a little pre planning to be able to do this, as the “capture now” process does not necessarily understand the proper flags or pulldown cadence if your not set up for it.

November 7, 2005 at 8:03 pmWhat do you mean by Pre planning?
If the 24p video streaming into the K2 is at 60p do you get it to 24p into FCP?Francois

First off
the 720p video stream (HDSDI) is always played out at 60fps, it is the same whether it is from the camera or from a deck the video is always playing at 60/ 59.94.
The setting is called AJA Kona2: 720p 23.98 DVCPro HD Varicam that allows you to capture 24p content from the HDSDI stream.

November 8, 2005 at 3:02 pmThanx, G. That’s what I thought the setting should be too.
Yet, I have tried this setting to capture shot 24p material, and the originally described symptoms were the result. (see first post). Is it correct to assume that you captured direct from the HDSDI stream off the camera?Francois
