[Scott Sheriff] “I agree those announced improvements to Avid and Adobe, were big improvements that were needed on those platforms, but how may of the average FCP guys are running multiple platforms, or really need those features? “

Have you been importing any P2, XDCAM or DSLR footage? It can take minutes to hours to import because it has to be re-wrapped into a Quicktime Wrapper. This is a big bottleneck in the FCP workflow.

Have you tried to edit with H.264 material from a DSLR? It has to be converted for editing because H.264 does not edit easily in FCP.

Both Adobe and Avid now import those files natively and you are ready to edit immediately. This is about efficiency. Do you want to wait hours for your footage to be wrapped in Quicktime wrappers or do you want to start editing right away?

This has nothing to do with multiple systems and everything to do with efficiency.

[Scott Sheriff] “But does any of that make you a better editor? Will it make the average FCP guy a better editor? For the average user, that doesn’t employ an army of assistant editors, have multiple rooms and deal with an endless parade of formats coming in the door, ” “

It won’t make you a better editor but it certainly allows you to finish your jobs quicker and move on to the next one. As the world is moving faster and faster to tapeless formats in your workflow, if you’re not dealing with any of these formats now, you will soon enough.

The ability to edit natively with these formats is a huge step forward for all editors no matter if you’re cutting in your spare bedroom like I did when I started the company or you work in a multi unit facility. And by the way, we’re a grand total of 4 people here, including me. Not sure how large you think this company is, but we’re not a huge company by any stretch.

[Steve Connor] “Walter is right to get excited about DaVinci Resolve, I still can’t believe that BMD have released it at that price, I’ll be very interested to see how he compares it to Color “

Actually that blog is coming out tonight. I started it yesterday but have more to add.

I know this is kinda weird, but if you need native MXF support in FCP, MXF4mac is where you need to be. No rewrapping, no transcoding, it has absolutely been the best thing that has happened to our P2 workflow since AVC-I came to FCP7. It also works for XDcam as well.

The Mercury Playback Engine does look sweet, but I can’t remember the last time I had 12 layers of video with a color correction applied to it while they were all flipping over themselves. Not in FCP anyway. 😉

That’s sweet. Cat-DV actually does the same thing too but then you have to purchase the entire media management tool.

You haven’t done the remake of “The Brady Bunch” yet? 🙂

Actually I love the ability to mix the formats in realtime in the timeline. I don’t care so much about 12 layers of video as the mixing of formats and more filters in realtime. I wonder if you can put a drop shadow on text and have that play back in realtime.

MXF4mac on top of CatDV is pretty damn sweet. Yes. Are you thinking about CatDV?

Yes, we are going to purchase it here. Probably in the very near future so we can start utilizing it before we move to our new facility.

I am not sure if you were trying to be funny or not but you can use drop shadows on titles. Infact any effect or transition can be added to the tiltes. I think you will have a fun time using the Premiere Pro titling tools.

Jeremy, I totally agree. However, the Mercury Engine isn’t only about playing 12 or 20 layers of video simultaneously, it’s about the ability to edit without restrictions. Whether it’s playing big RED files or Canon 5D files, MPE should allow users to edit it just like DV, P2 or other formats. Mix ‘n match codecs, frame rates and aspect ratios completely transparently to the user and not worry about when you need to add a color correction filter, levels, blur, etc.

Adobe is worried that people think of MPE as about a crazy number of videos simultaneously and it’s more about the above than that. Of course, if you do want the brady bunch in real-time….well there you go… 😉

Yeah, but FCP touts the same thing and you see how (not) well that works. Also, what happens when it comes time to conform? Does PPro just ‘handle’ it? Does it add/remove proper pulldown? Mixing resolutions is one thing, mixing frame rates is a whole different ball o’ wax.

Hey Jeremy, I guess that’s where you’d have to give it a go to see what the real experience is, but we’ve had a ‘resolution independent’ timeline for some time and it continues to surprise a lot of users. Unfortunately, I think Adobe sometimes take this for granted and we shouldn’t. In short, it REALLY does work – marketing gobbly-gook aside.

As for conform, you output what your final file type will be and you’re done. Of course, mileage may vary depending on what you want to do. With CS5, we added DPX export, so going from a file-based source format ultimately to a film print is possible.

I did a video a while ago that showed mixing and matching different codecs and such on the same timeline. It’s in the CS4 timeframe, but still valid for what we’re talking about.

on a completely unrelated note – how do you do the whole quote/format thing in your posts? I can’t seem to get it! 😉

I hope you find the above helpful.
