  • Good News if true – Jobs promises ‘awesome’ update to Final Cut Studio

Posted by Dave Jenkins on April 18, 2010 at 8:35 pm

Apple is still backing Final Cut, and the next release of Final Cut Studio will be “awesome,” claims CEO Steve Jobs. Continuing a trend of replying to customer e-mails, Jobs is noted to have recently answered a complaint about the video production suite, which called the changes to Final Cut Studio 3 “not stellar.” The e-mail also alleges that people laid off from the Final Cut team may have been engineers, who would normally be responsible for advancing the software.
In addition to reaffirming Apple’s commitment to Final Cut, Jobs further comments that the people who lost their positions were in support roles, not in engineering. It is not certain when Final Cut Studio 4 might be ready; Mac Soda claims “reliable word,” however, that it will be released before the end of 2010. Such a timeline would represent a much faster turnaround than the gap between FCS2 and FCS3, however, which was roughly two years.

Yeah, we were all discussing this email last week at NAB. It’s a three sentence email and we all wondered just how much Steve Jobs even understands what Final Cut Pro is, how it operates and just how sweet the Adobe CS5 package and DaVinci Resolve run on the same Mac Hardware that Studio runs on.

I take his three sentence email with a grain of salt considering he does not know much about Post Production and what would make Studio “awesome.” I could go on, but I did a blog entry earlier today that pretty much spells out how I see the Three A’s.

Really, Walter? You know better about making software than Steve Jobs? Well done! Well maybe you are right and he doesn’t know what he talking about. He is wrong all the time!

And why did you think they would have another FCP since July last year? When has any of the A’s put out another version in less than a year? And Apple has many times said they don’t do trade shows — not even MacWorld. Did you really think that they would show something new?

Here is some real professional opinion:

Steve Jobs also stated the G5 CPUs would reach over 3GHZ by the end of the year when they were first released. That never happened. Is Steve Jobs just telling you what you want to hear?

I heard the new iADS thingy is going to be 64 bit before FCP : )

Who really knows what Steve jobs will do? : (

But for 10 years almost FCP comes out on regular scheudle. Why this time will be different? What do you know?

Ok, this seems to pops up at least once a month, so I’m going to be the ‘wet blanket’ here.
I don’t get all this rumor mongering about making FCP ‘better’, or in this case ‘awesome’. It seems like for the majority of the users, and the majority of their work flows, it works just fine, and they all seem content.
Are there some things I, or other folks would like to see changed? Sure. But what software/hardware is perfect?
How many out there know the entire suite so well that there isn’t anything left to learn? I’m not just talking about FCP, but the whole thing. Can you write an FX script? Are you a Color expert? How are your Motion or Soundtrack skills?
So I say, instead of spending a lot of time chasing your tail wondering if/when the next version of FCP is coming out, and what it will do, spend that time learning the aps you have.
Same goes for the Avid vs FCP debate, complete waste of time.
In the end, these things are just tools, and it is the users that really make the difference, not what version your using.

No no no you got it all wrong. I heard that they are bringing iAds to FCP. That way if you have a client who does not want to pay you what you are worth you can put iAds in there production to make up the difference.

I heard that Sony Vegas is going to be 128bit and we all have to start switching now or we’re doomed.

Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

Walter, how do you know what he knows about Post Production? I mean really? Wouldn’t you think that being CEO of Pixar and acquiring FCP for Apple that he would have learned a little something along the way? I know that you don’t like some of his decisions but let’s not act like the man is a moron.

[Steve B] ” When has any of the A’s put out another version in less than a year? “

I’m pretty sure CS3 came out two years ago, CS4 came out last year and CS5 is coming out shortly. Being a software only company, Adobe does tend to bring out a new suite each year. The Mercury Engine being just incredible and making that suite very VERY efficient to use.

Scott, what we all saw, and you too if you were there, was DaVinci Resolve running full frame video with multiple nodes on it using the exact same Mac hardware available to Studio.

Adobe and Avid were both cutting H.264 in realtime with no conversion. They were both cutting P2 material in realtime with no conversion or wrappers. They were both cutting XDCAM material with no wrappers or conversions. The Mercury Engine in Adobe brought out tremendous realtime capabilities using the same Apple hardware that we’re all using with Studio that we’re not getting from Apple.

In short, the other manufacturers are generating more realtime capabilities and more efficient workflows on Apple hardware than Apple. It’s not that I’m looking for new features that we don’t have in Studio. I want to know why the other A’s can utilize Apple hardware better and more efficiently than Apple.

As for Jobs understanding Final Cut Pro and how it works, please point me to something he has edited, or sat in on the edit, the sound design, the color grade, etc….. For the person “sitting in the chair” doing the work, streamlined efficiency and workflow is what gets you excited about an “awesome” update. That’s what Avid and Adobe presented. Apple gave us their usual silence so we have three other companies about to release products that are much more efficient in how they operate than Studio with no idea of what Apple is bringing to bear with any future Studio update. That’s why I said in my blog and will say it again, their silence this year actually backfired in my opinion.

We will be installing CS5 in our suites when it is available because we run After Effects / Photoshop every day so I’ll definitely be giving Premiere a spin since it operates with all of our installed hardware. We’ll also have Resolve so we can test that alongside Color.

I don’t write software nor do I care to learn. That’s what software engineers are for and right now Avid, Adobe and DaVinci engineers have really shown us some incredible improvements to the Post Production workflow that make FCP sluggish by comparison. I hope Apple has something “awesome” up their sleeve, but I still take his word with a grain of salt. When I see “Produced by Steve Jobs” then maybe he will have actually sat in on entire edit sessions to get a sense of how Final Cut Pro is actually used day to day.
