  • First time editing HDV with HD materials …

    Dear friends,
I will try to explain everything that I’m about to get in …. and hope to get advices from the best guys ….
First of all, it is my first HD material to be edited.
I wasn’t the director nor the camera operator.
The project was about to be shouted with only one camera (client and director choices), the Canon DSLR D5. But I (unfortunately) made the mistake of taking my HDV camera to the set (in a studio). Once it was there, they change their mind and decided to use it for different angles.
I know, most of you reading this , probably are saying: What a mess it will be on timeline for editing. And I will add something: Do you all know the Murphy’s Law ? The project is for Chroma Keying !
Being the editor I have to take the problems, solve them and make the project alive.
The final goals are to author a DVD and also put it in the client’s server to be watched on Web.
Let’s say what I’ve already done and what I’m thinking to do.

    Done:
    – I’ve captured the HDV material (1440 x 1080i) from tapes as Prores 422 and they are already there in FCP.
    – I took the Canon Plugin and “Log & Transfer” the D5 material ( 1920 x 1080 – square) as Prores 422 and they are in FCP.

    A test:
I’ve dragged a little piece of the D5 Prores 422 to the timeline, which became a Prores 422 1920 x 1080 square timeline. After that I dragged a little pice of the HDV Prores 422 to the same timeline and it asked for render on it. I believe it is because of the difference of frame sizes and the Scan Type (D5-Progressive / HDV-Interlaced).
    Question 1:
To avoid the need of render and not lose the color information and resolution of the D5 material, should I take the HDV material to compressor and upscaling it (using frame controls) to 1920 x 1080 and make it progressive ? Or would it be easier to edit both as interlaced ?

    Workflow thoughts :
    – Color Label each camera material
    – Proceed a rough edit (without Chroma Keying) after solving the question 1
    – Keying each camera clips separately
    – Color adjustments to equalize the materials.
    – Insert the backgrounds, lettering, filters and etc ….
    – Render and export as Quicktime for compression.

    sorry for the long post.
    Thanks in advance.
    Fredy.
