Up your ram. FCP can only harness 4 gigs at the moment, but it’s good to have extra. If you get new RAM, start over and take out the 3Gigs you gave now.

The only thing that truly speeds up a machine is processing power.

My two main ones (each Seagate Barracuda 7200 1.5TB) are internal SATA drives. i do have some media on my external drives, though, but the vast bulk of it is internal (not sure of the speed of the drives, but they are 1 year old seagates…

but AHA! I just went to Disk Utility to look the drives. One of my media drives has “Partition Map Scheme: GUID Partition Table”, the other’s scheme is “Apple Partition Map”. What would be the difference in performance here???

faster rendering, too? i’ve been thinking about a raid for awhile…but a bit confused on what to get, whether to set it up for speed, redundancy redundancy redundancy or both?

No. As said before, the only way to truly speed up is to get faster processors.

A raid will help with rt playback, and nominally with renders.

More RAM will help speed up your interface and cache drawings (waveforms and such) as will having a raid for that.

But faster rendering is all about processing speed.

The Mac site specs this as one of the graphics cards for this Quad-core Mac Pro – ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB. Anybody out there with this card? How do you like it?

One is formated for the system (GUID) and the other for the media (Apple Partition).
