First move in speeding up my Mac…

So i don’t muck up this forum any more than i need to with off-topic concerns, do any of you know of a central place to find out precisely what the RAM limit would be on my system? How RAM might be mixed and matched in my system? Which graphics cards will not only work in my system, but also reviewed as to best performance vs. price, etc.

(Now for anyone who might want to answer those questions here, here is my what i know for my Mac Pro Quad-Cor intel Xeon 2.66GHz Mac:

currently has 3 of 4 RAM slots each filled with a 1GB DDR3 1066 MHz RAM chip; (1 slot empty)

currently has the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, though i am seeing everyday more and more how dang slow my screen redraws are.

i’ve heard a few good reviews from you guys on the ATI4870…are there other options? better? faster? for this Mac?

When buying RAM from sites like crucial or transintl, you supply the model of comuter, they show you the available RAM packages.

hey, that’s pretty cool at crucial…and i had no idea my Mac can take 16GB of RAM!!!! somehow i was thinking 6 was the limit when i bought it. oh well…

i know you CAN mix and match different amounts of RAM, though it seems to not be recommended, but is there a down side to keeping my 3 single 1GB chips and just adding in a 2 or 4 GB chip in the available slot?

thanks, but why “start over”? could i not leave (2) of my 1 GB’s in their slots and add in (2) 2 GBs to the other 2 slots giving me a total of 6GB for the moment? that would double my current 6 GB…

(just wondering why, because i do not know!) : )

Buy all new RAM. It’s easier and you will have less problems. It is not good to mix and match from different vendors. K? K.

i found a few slightly different 5770’s at new egg.

one is the XFX HD-577A-ZNFC Radeon HD 5770 and the other is the HIS H577FK1GD Radeon HD 5770.

other than $5, what is the difference?
