Finding the “file type” or “codec” of a file in PP
Posted by Luke Pearson on May 22, 2013 at 8:27 pmHey guys. I’m newly converted from FCP7 to PP CS6. How do I get the codec of a particular video file to show up in my metadata in the project window? for instance, I have two videos in my project. One file is Prores 422 LT. The other is H.264. In FCP this info would show up under “compressor” in the browser window. I’m not seeing this info anywhere in PP.
thanks for any help.

May 22, 2013 at 9:08 pmYou can right click in the bar that contains the names of the metadata columns to bring up the metadata display selections. Not sure if what you are looking for is there but if it is that is where you will find it.

May 22, 2013 at 9:28 pmthanks, Kris. Yea i’ve been browsing through all those metadata options but haven’t been able to find what I”m looking for. There are a lot of options so I wasn’t sure if I was missing something simple.

May 24, 2013 at 1:51 pmI saw that in the list but it does not show the compressor type, my thoughts were that this is a field where the user inputs the data but I could be wrong. we might see this in the next release on the 17th of June.

May 27, 2014 at 11:38 pmThis column seems to be active with codecs that Adobe handles natively in CC…I don’t know if that can harvest that metadata from a QT file…I can’t get that column to work for any QT file here. (on Windows)

May 28, 2014 at 12:15 amMy apologies, this is on a Mac. FCP 7 had no issues identifying the files, and I’m able to see the metadata on individual files when I right click properties. I can’t speak for CC as it’s not cost effective right now for my company to switch from one capital expense purchase for licences (cs6) to a reoccurring subscription expense for CC. We have over 200 seats to license and previously we upgraded every other version. However, I digress as this thread is about why metadata doesn’t show up in a specific field, not about the differences between CS6 and CC.

May 28, 2014 at 2:08 amI wasn’t so much focused on the differences between CC and CS6…I just looked at CC.
The column doesn’t seem to be very active at any rate. I did get data on XDcamHD media.
QuickTime and CineForm AVI left the column blank for me. Not terribly useful.

May 28, 2014 at 2:14 amAt this point I don’t expect a fix, especially for CS6, I was just wondering if I was overlooking a fix or perhaps another field that shows the codec. We daily get in hundreds of differently formatted videos and to be able to glance down a list to confirm they are our correct specs would be extremely useful. FCP7 can do this so issues like this are severely impacting our decision to move to Premiere.
Thanks for your input Tim! I’ll add this issue to the evergrowing list of “reasons to upgrade to CC” to give to my boss haha
