Final Cut on Mac Book Air?
OK, I know it’s not a recommended use. But I have a specific need for a second laptop to transcode Canon 7d and Panasonic AVCHD while on location. Size and weight is critical so I’m just wondering if anyone is running a stripped down FCP install on a Mac Book Air?

NO need for FCP, you can use ClipWrap2 or Magic Bullet GRINDER (grinder for the DSLR footage) to do this.

Still interested to know if anyone is running FCP on a MacBook Air, though.

OH, it runs. But not many people use it as the Air doesn’t offer the Firewire connection FCP needs. If you are only converting, then going to USB drives will be fine. It’s playback that suffers with USB.

Macbook air for rendering stuff is not good- its fast read and write times because SSD but slow render times because bad processor. This applies to transcoding and converting stuff as well- get a macbook pro, itll serve you better.

Thanks Thomas, I’ll be editing on a 17″ MBP. The MB Air is just for transcoding. The MB Air will be a present to my wife after this one 4 day shoot and she doesn’t use FCP. (SHHH! It’s a secret, don’t tell my wife.)
