Thank you so much for this insight. I was just about to post asking for help with missing events (disappearing when FCPx loads) and found this thread.

I had put an AVCHD file from my camera on the root of my external drive and inadvertently caused this issue. Once I moved it, all my events reappeared and media linked up in my projects.

Yes, such a relief!
