October 21, 2013 at 6:18 pm[Chris Harlan] ” the transition to Premiere is a pretty soft learning curve, but the transition to Media Composer, depending on how you used FCP, is every bit a steep as going to X. “
Indeed, and there are quite a few folks who learned to cut on FCP that are in a bit of a pickle because of this.
[Chris Harlan] “but that’s because I like the interface better, not because I think you’re wrong in wanting to use X.”
Is there a +1 button around here? 😉 I feel the same abut the X interface, but I don’t feel the need to tell folks who don’t that their NLE choice is somehow substandard. (not that you’ve ever done that Chris, but I’m pretty sure some people have. lol)
It is unfortunately easy to get defensive when people, often in a backhanded way, impugn your professional credibility based on software preferences though… 😉 “Let’s see your reel” and “Get an IMDB credit and then we’ll talk” comments are kind of insulting. On the flip side, so are the “learn it!” comments.
Can’t we all just get along? After all, the biggest problem we all face, regardless of NLE, is our damn clients! 😀

October 21, 2013 at 6:22 pmI wish you much luck on your own path to cushiness; may you achieve it some day. And, if you do–or, perhaps, already have–may it not be ripped out from under you.
I have to tell you dude, you talk a lot of very angry, very bitter nonsense.

(he says all angry and bitter… 😀 Oh the irony.):-)))))) … mmmh-hmmm. Sure. I’d say that says a LOT more about your frame of mind than mine.
“Maybe it does! Who knows? We’ll have to see.

October 21, 2013 at 6:46 pm[Andy Branner] “Precisely. I don’t know how many times it’s become painfully apparent that (especially the “seasoned”) pros are just plain miffed at nothing other than the fact that Apple had the audacity to take away their elitist status (literally saying “Apple betrayed us”! :D) and NOT continue the trodden path of cushiness they came to enjoy. To dare to (considerably help) make away with the days where being “an editor” meant being a part of a very small crowd with a LOT of money and the time and patience to deal with the amazing technical intricacies that video or even film production posed. 80% of that now gone. The stress of having to keep up and even having gotten as far as they have has resulted in them being freakishly afraid of any further changes. Especially if that invites more people (riffraff) to the party. Make it an entire paradigm shift and you lose them completely and they’re gonna let you know it. And be it through mere personal incredulity. No one left to pat them on the back as much is a real bummer. :D”
I take it that your not one of those “cushies”, so you must be an unsuccessful editor with no money, no time, no patience and no ability to handle technical intricacies. And we’re supposed to care about your opinion because …

Honestly, while that may be true for a small subset of our small subset, I think the biggest problem “pro’s” had with X was:
No ability to open legacy projects
No ability to talk to online/finishing systems. (no EDL’s, OMF/AAF etc)
Convoluted and confusing collaborative workflow
No mixing/roundtripping capability
No tracks. 😉Honestly, when X was released I was horrified. But after a few versions I gave it another shot and now I don’t like cutting in anything else. I can, but I prefer not to. Some people don’t like it… no biggie. It’ll either catch on in our rarified world or not. I hope it does, ‘cuz I like it. 😉

Here, here. Being here, over the last several years, has totally convinced me of X’s viability. It’s been a very enjoyable discussion, and I’ve probably learned as much about myself, and why I work the way I do, as I’ve learned about X. Hooray for the observed life, and all.

That’s helpful. :eye roll: C’mon Herb, you know that X is only useful for home movies, why take the bait? 😉

Hi Chris –
I hope I am not insinuating right or wrong. I use FCPX, FCP7 and Premiere for my editing company and I use them in specific situations (there is not a post house in my area that has Avid for 4-wall rental anymore, thus Avid is not in my list…all the FCP7 houses have gone to Premiere).
I was just pointing out that new editors are taking to X much faster than I observed in 7, Apple seemed to do something very right with this new NLE, especially with new unbiased editors, old editors (like me) are usually wary of new things and change, and that history repeats itself!
All good. Just my humble opine.

October 21, 2013 at 7:00 pm[Andy Branner] ” see I forgot to mention the rather sad ad hominem, vitriolic attacks that come with the territory also, since actual or real argument instead are few and far between once you hold the mirror up too high. :)”
Dude, your lack of self awareness is astounding. Go back and read the post to which Herb was responding to if you want to see “sad ad hominem, vitriolic attacks.” You’re putting off a pretty strong Robespierre vibe, like its the guillotine for anybody who makes a living editing in traditional media.

Totally get it, Scott. I was actually enjoying your discussion with Oliver.
