Is DV superior to VHS? Yes.

Does that mean that DV is an ideal intermediate for VHS? No, not necessarily.

It doesn’t matter if DV is multitudes better than VHS; using DV as the mezzanine codec will visibly affect the footage. DV compression has visual character of its own. DV will introduce new chroma subsampling and compression artifacts, which will be vastly more pronounced than the artifacts that ProRes 422 will introduce via analog capture.

That’s not to say it’s automatically the wrong choice. Clint will have to make a qualitative judgement call. DV is a totally valid choice for this workflow, but there are tradeoffs to consider versus analog capture to ProRes.

Of course that’s a factor as well, and it’s one of the things that Clint has to weigh as he makes his decision.

I’m simply discussing the options available for Clint’s consideration, but you seem to be arguing them with me. Have I said anything that’s factually incorrect, or are you just being contrary?

I should mention it isn’t all VHS. About a third of the footage was shot using a high-quality Betacam. I still have a refurbished Sony D600P around that I shoot with occasionally when I want that analog newsy look (it also makes kind of a cool looking prop).
