November 14, 2013 at 3:52 pm[Jeremy Garchow] “I think you are speaking of dropout, not dropped frames.”
I am actually talking about dropped frames. Sometimes when I upload older VHS into FCP7 I get dropped frame warnings. Also some oddball breaks in footage due to timecode issues. I think this may be due to issues with my deck and the age of the tape.
Dropouts are just something I have learned to live with.

November 14, 2013 at 4:51 pmDropped frames are usually due to slow drives, but can be triggered by a “dirty” signal or control track.
A TBC will absolutely help in this situation.
In also agree on ProRes capture out of a TBC if you can swing it.

November 14, 2013 at 5:34 pm[Gary Huff] “Well, reading it again, it mentions that these are FireWire devices. Given their age, it’s either going to work with the adapter or not anyway”
I may have misstated due to my lack of working with Thunderbolt (my imac is the generation before Thunderbolt). It is my understanding that some older firewire devices do not work with the thunderbolt adapter (cameras, MIDI instruments, and such). Several of my musician friends bitterly complained about this. And as Gary said, given the age of my Sony HDV camera and the Canopus, I was afraid this might be the case.

No, you are right. And its a fair question. Ignore the ill-informed disdainful noise. Most of the driver issues that I’m aware of have been with drivers for Express cards that people were trying to use with Thunderbolt Express card adapters. The firewire issues that I’m aware of are power related, in that the Tbolt bus does not offer enough power to power a number of bus-powered firewire devices. If you operate the device with external power, this won’t be a problem.

November 15, 2013 at 3:54 am[Bret Williams] “How else would you read ” I don’t think they have updated drivers for thunderbolt?”
A driver for thunderbolt would be a thunderbolt driver. I thought it was quite a bizarre statement as well. “
Actually, a number of drivers for Express cards had to be updated to function with Thunderbolt Express card readers because of incompatibilities with Thunderbolt. And, many were not updated, never will be, and will never be compatible. Some bus powered Firewire devices also need driver alterations to function in bus-powered mode under Tbolt’s more limited bus power, and, many will never be able to be bus powered on the first iteration of Tbolt. So, there are numerous driver issues related to TBolt that don’t involve “TBOLT DRIVERS.”

November 15, 2013 at 4:00 am[Gary Huff] “Well, now first of all, I never said a THUNDERBOLT DRIVER. I said I have to install a driver to get my UHS-I card reader working over the Echo Express, which is a Thunderbolt device.
“Yes. There were a lot of driver related issues with Express cards and Thunderbolt. I don’t know why you are getting all this face plant stuff. You were very clear with everything you wrote. I think he jst jumps at things and then can’t back off.

Cute, which is why you’re the on who pops on here with an incredibly grating personality that spouts off things they clearly don’t know about, and whose work cannot be seen, and declines to offer any links when asked.I don’t have to be Aragorn to recognize a troll.”
Actually, I’m pretty sure I know who Andy is, though I won’t say. If I’m correct, than he is quite experienced. And pretty right on the mark a lot of the time, if you can get past his rough edges.
I think he is a perfect match for this particular forum.
