    Hi,

    The other day i had to export my timeline (FCP 6) of 25 minutes back to a xd cam (sony 530 imx 30). The time it took surprised me somewhat.It took me about 65 minutes. The plan was to export the timeline back to xd disk and than beam everything up via satalite (for broadcast in another place) using sdi out (embedded). Is there a quicker way to do this. Somebody told me that i could play the timeline from my macbook and use the xdcam as a bla bla converter en hook it up to the satilite in some way. If enyone can help me let me know because this seems like a timeconsumuing way to work.

    If budget is a problem, XDCAM thru firewire is rather slow, BUT economical. Another option would be to purchase a Matrox MXO for direct SDI output to anything.

    So i can just play the timeline thru the Matrox MXO and via it’s sdi output ( bnc whire) i can beam it up a satilite and that would cive me the same result as the long 65 min. write back session?
    Would it work to downgrade the imx 30 timeline (via sequence settings) to dv and play this throu the sony 530 set to av/c and than out via sdi bij bnc wire?

    So i could just play the timeline throu the Matrox MXO and there is a sdi output (bnc video wire) that i can connect on the other side…
    and that signal i can beam on too a satalite just as good as i play out of the sony 530’s disc?

    If i decide to stay budget would it be able to convert the timeline
    (now (imx 30) to DV and then use the camera(sony 530 xdcam set to av/c)to output the timeline via sdi out?

    Wayne,
    I don’t think is nothing to do with FW. You can move few threads of XDCAm through FW in RT without problem.
    XDCAM is slow to compress, but shouldn’t take that long unless you are re-compressing your whole sequence.
    If you are just cutting in the time line, FC only need to rebuild the first GOP of each cut. The process is really fast and done done in less than RT.
    So, or you are rendering everything or you are using a system with not enough performance.

    sounds interestin!Could you explain to me how to export it without recompressing it?

    Here is how i do it:Once i have finished my timeline i go to sequence settings > audio output > 8ch dual mono.

    Then i go up to file > export > sony xdcam and in the dialoge box i press the “go”(or whatever it says)” button in the right bottom corner. Like this it takes 65 minutes for 25 min imx 30 timeline.

    i would not know how to do it otherwise.
    i use a macbook pro laptop 10.4.11 with a 2.2GHz core 2 duo with 2GB memory. The camera i’v used is a Sony 530 xdcam
    It seems to me my laptop should be fast enough.

    Well, the problem lies with processing the footage in FCP.

    If you ingest the footage and put it right back to disc, the output times will be quicker. But now, when you edit a program, all of the Sony encoding is now lost and the export program has to repackage the video before going to disc.

    I remember very vividly in 2006 when we were working primarily with XDCAM IMX50, outputting a 28:30 program with bars, tone & slate would take approximately 1 1/2 hours thru the firewire export. It was pretty useless to us.

    Hi Jurriaan,
    Sorry I’m late.
    when you export you need uncheck “Recompress All frames”.
    In this case only the pictures where you have applied any filter or you have changed any motion tab parameter will be rendered and re-compressed.
    If everything is re-compressed you need to re-build every single GOP of your movie. That is a slow process that also will degrade your picture. Of course, if you have CC your movie for example, all the movie needs to be rendered.
    This is why I consider XDCAM as an acquisition format. Shoot XDCAM but render to other format.

    You are missing something.
    IMX 30 is now the broadcast standard in the Netherlands.
    (And yes, this goes for commercials as well.)
    Shows still have to be delivered on digibeta, but that will soon change. Commericals are no longer allowed to be delivered on DB, only in IMX 30 (well, the broadcasters call it MXF D10 with a lot of bla bla, but all the specs are Sony style…)

    Hi Bouke,
    You are absolutely right.
    I’ve never used that codec but just seen the specs I guess is really good.
    When I said that I consider XDCAM as an acquisition format, I was talking about my own workflow.
    I guess that a workflow based or ending in MPEG-2 will need somewhere a hardware solution for RT encoding.

    IMX30 is I-frame only true CBR, no GOP. The MXF standard for dutch television is based on the SMPTE 386M specs.

    FCP handles it with full realtime capabilities.
