I don’t know what to say, man, unless there’s something set up wrong or wrong with your card.

Time to take advantage of AJA’s wonderful tech support.

    Give them a ring.

I appreciate your time Jeremy, once I get this fixed . . if it’s not too embarrassing I’ll post the fix.

[dan] “I get nothing with that preset . . . .maybe I didn’t make it clear but the DVCPro 50 deck and monitor are SD.”

Did you run the signal Component directly from the Kona 3 to the SD monitor, bypassing the deck? I have to wonder if the deck is giving you the additional “jaggies.” SD downconvert is pristine here as we have been downconverting DVCPro HD to Beta for years here using the Crop function out of the Kona. No broadcaster or news organization has ever complained about the footage and it’s pristine here on our SD monitors.

    Hi Walter,

    Yes,
I’m running the Kona straight to the monitor via the three component cable bundle. I’m also monitoring the thru-put of the deck but that looks not so great also . . . has the jaggies and looks rather dull (composite from deck to monitor though so is expected). I’m at a loss right now and can’t figure this out. Our HD field monitor is on the road until the weekend so I’m stuck with my SD monitor. Never the less, I have to be able to get through this and output pristine SD . . . I have no doubts about the gear . .just the operator.

IN THE FCP AV SETTINGS make sure you have the video output to 525 29.97. If you want to monitor SD component then FCP’s output must be set to standard def, not 1080i.

You’ll get it…it is a matter of having the control panel and FCP settings just right and it will click in!

[Rich Rubasch] ” If you want to monitor SD component then FCP’s output must be set to standard def, not 1080i.”

Sorry, Rich, but that’s wrong. It’s the Kona COntrol panel that does the downconvert, not FCP. FCP plays out 1080i then you tell the Kona CP which signal to send out be it SD or HD.

    OK,

I just checked my file size and in FCP it says it is 1280×1080 . . is this right ?

On another front I switched my “video playback” in FCP to 1080i 29.97 (1920×1080). In pause or scrubbed the video looks great on the SD monitor, but when I try playing it I get greenish noise.

Dude, for the fifith time ( and I’m not getting snippy, just having fun). FCP has to be set for HD output, NOT SD!!!! Set the SD output in the Kona CP, keep FCP in HD. That’s why I had you setup the easy setup multiple times.

1280×1080 is native DVCPRo HD size.

    [dan]

That’s correct for DVCPro HD 1080i. It’s an anamorphic format. Video Playback for this will be full raster 1920×1080.

You should simply use the Easy Setup – AJA Kona 3 DVCPro HD 1080i/60 for your editing. This will set the Kona Control panel correctly for HD playback.

Then go into the Control Panel, set your Output to SD downconvert by selecting the Secondary output. (assuming you’ve set the secondary playback to 525)
