Yes you buy another copy of Final Cut Studio. Anything else would be illegal.

Ryan I cant believe that you are really asking how to break the law.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!

    Ryan,

You’ve been a Cow member since yesterday. Your first post is “how do I break the law?”.

I think you’ve wandered into the wrong pasture.

I suppose I shouldn’t chime in here. Zane and Mark have been remarkably restrained in their responses to Ryan’s question. But it just amazes me that Ryan and others seem to think that stealing software is OK. It’s as if they don’t understand that creating that software took years of work by scores of people with hundreds of years of combined experience, study and research. And some people just decide that stealing the fruits of that labor is OK?

Where does that attitude come from?

Ryan, any time you want to give your work away for free (as I sometimes do), you are welcome to do that. But otherwise, when you have to buy your food, pay your rent, and provide for your family, aren’t you glad that the law doesn’t allow someone to steal the work product that you have decided to create and sell?

Kind of makes you wonder what Ryan will ask in his second…

    Ron,

While I understand the concept of buying a license for each editing station it just doesn’t make sense for one-man shops like mine. I’m sitting here working with two macbook pro’s (necessary for my on-site editing projects) and have them both working on different aspects of the same production, alone. One owner, one editor. But I’m forced to either disconnect from the network or buy a completely redundant copy of identical software.

You’re running the software on two computers so I assume you’re charging for your time, correct? Even if it is one project.

You’re using two computers to make you more efficient, but you ARE using the software in two instances to provide income to you. Thus you are required to purchase two licenses of the software. I’m cutting a documentary right now on a Mac Pro and iMac both running off a shared SAN. Two licenses are required to do this.

The size of your facility and operation has no bearing on the licenses required. You’re a professional charging money for the use of your services, therefore, purchase two licenses legally. It’s only $999 now for a full license. That should easily be covered in a single job.

According to the Apple Final Cut Studio Software License Agreement:

    2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions
    A. Apple Software (Bundle)
This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on one Apple-labeled desktop computer and one Apple-labeled laptop computer so long as both computers are owned and used by you.

And if you work on two laptops? Arbitrarily denied.
