Not according to the EULA. I’m supposedly not even allowed to load it on two laptops.

August 27, 2009 at 9:34 pm“So what about the apple script “FCP dupe”. Which lets you open multiple copies of FCP on a single machine? ”
I’ve been doing that with a terminal command after watching ProMax do demonstration of multiple instances of FCP at a product demo. It works for other apps too by changing the command. Or by duplicating the application I can run as many instances of Toast as I want and send the results to different burners. Not sure how EULA applies in these situations.

September 8, 2010 at 10:09 pmSo he’s using FCP on two laptops at the same time, he’s still one man with two hands working on a single machine at any given moment.
My thought is that hopefully they will offer a discounted license so we can all be legal, but only own one copy of the software. I know they offer this with educational facilities that have 20 Macs in an editing lab. At the end of the day, the software is extremely affordable for what it is, and while I don’t think stealing software is fair, I would like to see Apple offer a version of software (I.E. “Family Pack”) like they do with other products where you can install on up too X amount of machines. Paying $1000 over and over again is pretty ridiculous especially when you are in my situation and have 4+ Macs running FCS apps at nay given time. One legal / not so legal way around this might be to by the educational version (doesn’t allow upgrades to new version) which is around 40% cheaper for each of your machines. Then you wouldn’t have the network protection error.
At the same time, some of you guys are a little too high on your horse acting as though someone who asks a question here is automatically a devious person looking to steal something. He quite literally may have not known Apple’s EULA and should be considered “innocent until proven guilty.” It seems as though there are some very cantankerous individuals in the business and it dis-heartens me because I bet with that kind of attitude, business is pretty rough for them. These people who want to be super-secretive about their workflows and equipment and feel that everyone is just out to undercut their inflated prices need to realize that FCS is only $1000, and video production supply is going to continue to grow as the demand does. In the last year I’ve seen at least a dozen new “Production Companies” pop up in the Austin area because someone thinks they can get rich quick by buying a pretty camera and a MAC. Those with talent will always have a job, those without will have to move on.

June 11, 2011 at 8:58 amI am really confused. I just got that same protection note on my Mac pro FCP that I have been using for 3 years. I just bought a macbook pro a couple of days ago and apple (geniuses and one to one trainer) installed it on my book as well saying it was ok to run on two of your own computers. They ended up using the same password as my mac pro because they couldn’t reach me when doing this data and application install. Am I too doing something illegal. I would hate to have to purchase another FCP. It seems strange that apple would install something illegal. Any suggestions on what I should do

June 11, 2011 at 3:31 pmHi Gigi,
You can run your copy of FCP on both your laptop and your tower, just not at the same time.
As I wrote in the original conversation:
“Apple understands that users need to take their business on the road from time to time via laptop, and they have decided to accommodate by officially recognizing and allowing users to do that without being in violation of their EULA. There are many other software vendors who are not so accommodating, and under terms of their licensing users can only install on one machine, period.”
When both machines are networked the second machine sees FCP open on the first machine across your network.

November 21, 2011 at 4:58 pmI have a different situation but similar problem. I have a computer lab with 24 computers that use FCP. this summer I needed to re-image the lab (complete HD wipe then OS reinstall) I have the original FCP CDs and I am trying to install it but it somehow still remembers the old install. I have enough CD’s and licenses for each computer so I am not breaking any law. Is there any way to clear the first install?
