  • FCP HD Monitoring?

Posted by Dean Brennan on September 19, 2008 at 4:14 pm

I was wondering what other people are using to monitor their HD while editing and to preview. I do not know if it would be more beneficial. To go with a multi format LCD monitor that is made for HD QC or just get a HDSDI to HDMI converter from my Kona 3 and view the HDMI signal on a 42 inch LCD. Will I lose a lot of color accuracy or quality going this route? Any recommendations?

    Thanks!

If you need accurate color for color grading then you go with a professional display like those from Panasonic and TV Logic.

If you just want a nice picture, pick up a Panny Pro plasma. They start under $900 for the 37″ display. We run two 42″ models and a 50″ model in our suites along with the broadcast CRT’s.

We will replace the CRT’s with TV Logic 24″ models, probably next year.

I need to understand if the Pana 37″ plays interlaced footage well? Or is it primarily progressive? Do they make a smaller version of this plasma TV?

    Thanks

Interlace and progressive. We display 1080i on ours all the time.

No, 37″ is the smallest plasma screen you can purchase.

Thanks for the reply. I think I may go with the 42 plasma then add the multiformat LCD next year. I still get close to accurate color results with my JVC CRT just not the HD resolution.

    Thanks!

Do you not recommend going the Matrox MXO2 route?

    Joe

I’d think as yet the MXO2 for color critical monitoring to an HDM display is not widely tested and I’d advise holding fire on that one for the moment (unless your needs are more for its I/O capabilities and you already have a monitoring setup for HD-SDI).

If you were solely looking for an affordable/accurate HD monitoring solution then the original MXO would still be a good buy, as its ability to generate accurate color on a (relatively) low priced LCD is already tried and tested.

    Cheers

Walter, if I was going to go the route with the Panasonic Plasma how accurate is the color going to be reproduced. I will be going HD SDI from my Kona to a converter that will convert the signal to HDMI and into the plasma. Will this have accurate color?

The Panny pro plasmas are pretty accurate in terms of colour rendition – and have a good set of controls to tweak away till you get it right.

I’d consider getting one ISF calibrated (which, according to a local calibrator, they do exceptionally well – better than most other plasmas) to REC 709 standard – then you’d have a pretty accurate picture. Not TV Logic standard, but one I would trust for non-critical correction and evaluation (and it’s not so far from that either – compared to my Sony broadcast CRT). I see some banding occasionally on mine (it is an 8-bit panel after all) but overall I’m very pleased with this display. I’m running HD and SD via component at the moment… SD looks remarkably good on it too, given a good source. You can often find them secondhand via home cinema forums – lots of people bought them as alternatives to domestic panels, and it seems people with ‘upgradeitis’ swap them out for full 1080 panels… I got mine in the UK for £500 with HDMI and component boards. Bargain for what it is..

Thanks for the reply Jason. I think my final decision is the 50 inch panny pro with 1920×1080 resolution. I will go HD-SDI from my Kona 3 card to HDMI into the plasma. Do you think this is a good resolution in terms of quality for the price compared to buying a TV Logic for $8,000?

My only concern now is that a 50 inch plasma would get annoying in from of my face all day. How hot do these get?
