FCP HD export is jerky

I’m not clear about your export/encoding workflow . If you’re not, I suggest you first Export a self-contained QT using Current Settings. Then bring that file into Compressor and use it to encode the H.264. Sending to Compressor or Using QT Conversion can introduce problems.

Thanks, I just this minute literally finished exporting a self contained QT and even that was jerky on playback before i even bothered sending it to compressor. I have done 5 exports – each taking an hour plus and every single export is wrong.

I dont suppose you can suggest to me the export settings I should be using once in compressor – I must be using the wrong frame rate or something? It was shot 25p and I’m using 25 as the frame rate – is this wrong?

Playing QTs at the size and data rate you’re making won’t always play well. If your drives aren’t fast enough or the directory is messy, that might cause the jerkiness. As a test, try encoding a smaller frame size like 640×360 and don’t use a high data rate. If that plays well then your problems may stem from slow drives.

i think my problem is: cutting a film – no problem, but I don’t understand and the technical/format foundations.

You’re exporting a large, hi-rez movie file.
This won’t play back (likely) smoothly off an internal drive. Don’t worry about it. Encode it to what you need.

I think I would try to export a 2-5 minute portion of the film first. Check it and see how it turns out. Then you can make your technical changes without waiting 2 hours for each test run.

Many thanks for your help.

In the end i solved the problem by changing the compressor to xdcam 720 VBR 25 instead of the H.264 standard

Not sure why, but it exports all the films and plays them perfectly now.
