FCP HD export is jerky
Posted by Eve Myhill on July 5, 2010 at 8:56 pmI have just finished cutting a project on FCP and when I export its jerky on QT playback.
I am using footage shot on Sony 700 so its XDcam HD422 1080p25
I render before export
I am exporting through compressor: QT H.264
25 fps
compression type: H.264
Size: 1920 x 1080
Field output: progressive
Codec: H.264
Everytime I export the timeline its jerks, and skips and generally Bug*ers up. It drives me crazy, It’s something I’m doing in the export settings clearly. I really just need some fail -safe settings to export these films without the problems.
Many many thanks in advance

July 5, 2010 at 10:09 pmI’m not clear about your export/encoding workflow . If you’re not, I suggest you first Export a self-contained QT using Current Settings. Then bring that file into Compressor and use it to encode the H.264. Sending to Compressor or Using QT Conversion can introduce problems.

July 5, 2010 at 10:14 pmThanks, I just this minute literally finished exporting a self contained QT and even that was jerky on playback before i even bothered sending it to compressor. I have done 5 exports – each taking an hour plus and every single export is wrong.
I dont suppose you can suggest to me the export settings I should be using once in compressor – I must be using the wrong frame rate or something? It was shot 25p and I’m using 25 as the frame rate – is this wrong?

July 5, 2010 at 10:28 pmPlaying QTs at the size and data rate you’re making won’t always play well. If your drives aren’t fast enough or the directory is messy, that might cause the jerkiness. As a test, try encoding a smaller frame size like 640×360 and don’t use a high data rate. If that plays well then your problems may stem from slow drives.

July 6, 2010 at 6:55 pmthanks John,
I’ll give it a try.
i think my problem is: cutting a film – no problem, but I don’t understand and the technical/format foundations.
thanks again, i’ll let you know how i get on.

July 6, 2010 at 7:34 pmYou’re exporting a large, hi-rez movie file.
This won’t play back (likely) smoothly off an internal drive. Don’t worry about it. Encode it to what you need.Chris Tompkins

July 6, 2010 at 7:51 pmI think I would try to export a 2-5 minute portion of the film first. Check it and see how it turns out. Then you can make your technical changes without waiting 2 hours for each test run.

July 12, 2010 at 7:56 pmHi all,
Many thanks for your help.
In the end i solved the problem by changing the compressor to xdcam 720 VBR 25 instead of the H.264 standard
Not sure why, but it exports all the films and plays them perfectly now.
Thanks again for all responces

July 12, 2010 at 8:02 pmI’m glad it worked out. Were you editing with the H.264 codec or just using it to export?
