None of the FCP project files (autosaves, main file on HD #1, backup copy on HD #2) for one of my huge projects will open, “General Error” pops up.

    Very scared!

Do I trash preferences? Any pointers to good tutorials on this subject?

Can you open up an untitled/new project in FCP just by clicking on the FCP program icon?

Trashing preferences should get rid of this for you.

Go here and download the appropritae version for your FCP:

    https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/

The general error will go away and don’t worry it’ll be fine.

Yes, I can open up a new project by clicking on the FCP icon.

And I just followed the directions on Apple’s site re. trashing preferences (I didn’t empty trash, they’re still in the can), and I get the same general error for this specific project.

I get the following when trying to do FCPrescue:

    Bandwidth Limit Exceeded
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later.
    Apache/1.3.34 Server at http://www.andersholck.01webspace.com Port 80

Is there another program you recommend? thanks!

    Same program different website:

Also, what have you done recently to your project files, anything in terms of move them? You might want to get info on them and make sure they have the proper read/write permissions.

Thanks Jeremy, I’ll try the program —

Thinking I was being proactive and cautious, I renamed the project last night and moved a backup copy to another HD. I was told to not keep saving the file over and over, to rename it once in awhile…… ?

Ran FCP rescue — still get general error.

Any other suggestions, or am I in trouble?

Okay, take the original file, and duplicate it. Put the copy on your desktop and keep it there for now.

Now take the unduplicated file and get info on it. In the info window at the very bottom you will see a section called ownership & permissions. You need to change everything so it says read&write, not read only. And who told you to change the name, and for what reason? I am for being thorough and backing up, but changing the name would seem to introduce some problems. That’s either here nor there, let’s try and get your file open first.

    Ok, copy is on desktop.

Ownership & Permissions had Read & Write selected already.

When I first started using FCP and was just looking for tips on how to make sure this type of thing doesn’t happen, someone on a forum said that doing a “save as” and changing the name every once in awhile would ensure that if my file got corrupted, I wouldn’t be saving it over and over.

I have never heard of that. I just backup the project to another drive and let it fly. Can you post a copy of the project somewhere so I can see if I can open it?

When you ran FCP Rescue, FCP was quit, correct? What version of FCP are you running? How big is your project file? Can you open the file before you did the new save as?
