If you are talking about listening to a captured clip, you do have to close the log and capture window to hear it playback, this has been the behavior of FCP 4 and 3 etc.. as far as I know…

Nah, say you just laid down a master with Edit to Tape and you want to spot check to make sure Audio and Video laid down correctly (without going down to the machine room to the actual machine). So you rewind a bit in the Edit to Tape – you can see the video track, but you can’t hear the audio. this USED to work in FCP 3 and 4.

If you do a clean install of it all (no upgrades – erase and install from the ground up after backing up all you need to keep) things go a LOT better…

clean install, new system(dual 2.7 w/ 4 gigs). no final cut crashes. one motion.
Edited majority HDV some DV, and converted media into many different formats. very stable. very happy.

I did a clean install of Tiger and 5 on an empty formatted disk and I see problems. It may be FCP, it may be QT 7, it may have to do with the AJA IO. Some of it definitely seems to be small bugs in FCP. Reminds me of 3.0 and 4.0. They had weird things happen that seemed to settle down in the upgrades that followed. Regardless, I am using FCP 5 daily, it works well enough and I can’t be bothered to downgrade.

What kind of weird things Nick? Could you report? The only major bug I’ve seen is the paste contents function in attributes seem to have been broken.

Another vote for clean instal of Tiger and FCP5 – no problems running a DV set-up.

I’m sorry guys, this version of FCP is Buggy. I’ve now done clean installs of the OS (tiger) as well as the Creative Suite on two different systems, Dual 2.5 G5 with a Blackmagic card and a dual 1.25 G4 with a Aja IO, and neither work well. I’m encountering sticky timelines and a real general “slow to act” functionality of the Program. Maybe it’s tiger, maybe it’s the application but definately a problem. I’m holding off installing it on any more machines until the (point) release.

Another problem is a reconnect malfunction i encountered, I connect to media over a network and when FCP cant’ seem to find a file. it asks for (blank), nothing the name is gone. it was there before because i imported the files from the network and the link would have been created then. but somehow when FCP lost the connection it lost the name of the file too. So i had to click one my one to reconnect all the files. BAD FINAL CUT BAD.

Could you give a description of the contents of your sequence, length, number of events and such as I’m not seeing any stickiness in the timeline, but this may be a function of the AJA. Have you contacted them?

I haven’t seen a reconnect failure either and I do a lot of drive and location swapping. Are you assigning a specific drive for search, or just letting it go? It certainly seems slower than 4.5 if a specific location is not designated, but if a drive is picked it is much, much faster.

    Tom.
I believe your questions are geared toward isolating the problem, however none of this should matter. A timeline should play regardless of the length (with in moderation, of course)

But in good spirit of this forum, the sequence was about 4 minutes long and roughly about 25 edits and no more than 2 layers of video…. ON that one…but today i’m cutting on the dual 1.25 g4 and with just one layer of video and two of audio, i get a pause frame intermittently when moving in higher speeds through the cut. I check to see if FCP has crashed, check my email and come back and it has caught up to it self. Not good.

in regards to the drive question. All media for a specific project should be kept organized and together whenever possible, i’m aware that some people scatter all of their material over several drives, but not me. I run a TV channel on dish network with Final Cut Pro, where we crank out 40 hours of programming a week… i can not afford to operate like that. Media gets lost or deleted if not kept together and in some sort of structure. So my project is on one drive.
    Hope this helps.
