  • Fair price for Vegas Pro 8 license?

Posted by Mark Oneill on March 31, 2011 at 11:22 pm

    Hello all,

I purchased Sony Vegas Pro 8 somewhere around 2008/2009.

I have been using it since then, but recently tried the Vegas Platinum HD 10 trial and liked the features enough to decide that Platinum suits my needs and want to buy that and sell my Vegas Pro license. I don’t need both. I also have an older version of Movie Studio, but I won’t be upgrading that – this Platinum purchase will start with a new license.

When I purchased Vegas Pro 8, it was actually a stripped down version available for a limited time from B&H; everything was exactly the same as the boxed version, except it only came with a disk, no box and no DVD Architect.
There is a possibility that it didn’t include a certain codec, (H.something-something/can’t remember), but I can’t confirm that. (If this relevant to a potential sale, and someone knows of this codec – please let me know.)

Other than that, the program is as functional as the boxed version. I should mention that I have never upgraded to any other versions; as I understand this will allow a potential buyer to upgrade. (Correct?)

I saw, on a different forum, someone sold a Pro 8 license, (also originally purchased as the stripped down version), for only $50.
Right now, on Amazon, Pro 8’s (full version) prices are $769.94 and $349.95:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000VVC01A/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&qid=1301611640&sr=8-2&condition=new

I also could include DVD Architect 4.5 in the price, (was bundled with my older Movie Studio), as the Suite version of Platinum I’m getting will also come with DVDA 5.0.

What would be a fair price to sell the Pro 8 license for?

To clarify, I’m not soliciting for any buyers here, just looking for an opinion on price.

Lastly, I wouldn’t have to mail the actual disk to the buyer, as Pro 8 trial can be downloaded off the net, correct? (I don’t see it on Sony’s site anymore.)

    Thanks for any input.

Your stripped version is HUGELY different from the real pro version in that it did not come with DVD Architect PRO.

Vegas Pro installed with DVDa PRO unlocks the pro Dolby Digital encoder… which is what costs the big dollars. Without DVDa PRO then you can not access the pro encoder.

The hooker to all of this is that you can’t purchase the pro version of DVDa separately…. so the DVDa version you have to offer is the “studio” version (no pro level dolby encoder). This is why there is such a substantial difference in the pricing.

I knew there was something different, but couldn’t recall the details. Thanks.

That being said, if someone were to purchase my license and then upgrade to Pro 10 (or 9,11) – would this entitle them to a full version?
Or are there also lite versions of the newer (9,10) that they could only upgrade to?

Would they even be entitled to upgrade at all/can only use as Pro 8?

I would contact Sony because this is a special version without DVD Architect Pro. Normally, if you haven’t use the license key to upgrade to a newer version, the person who buys your license will be able to. The way it works is that you contact Sony and tell them who you sold the license to and they invalidate your license key and issue the new owner their own license key.

Actually John… I know someone who purchased the stripped version. To his surprise (and to mine) his license allowed him to upgrade to the next FULL version (that includes DVDa pro).

Rob, I thought this might be the case. I didn’t think there was any difference in the license keys but I wasn’t sure.

In fact, now that I think of it, this makes perfect sense since you can upgrade from Vegas Video 3 to Vegas Pro 10 for the same price as upgrading Vegas Pro 9 to Vegas Pro 10. Sony has never pro-rated their upgrade prices because on previous version.

    Thanks, John..

I contacted Sony as you suggested. They said I can sell the license and the buyer can upgrade to a new Pro version.

So, I’m back to wondering what price I should ask for…

It depends, where do you plan to sell it? I would go on eBay and watch a few auctions and see what they are going for.

Many times people will buy an older version for the upgrade and you have that in your favor now. The Vegas Pro 10 street price is US$520. The upgrade price is US$240 so the difference is US$280. Your selling price has to be cheap enough to save them enough money to want to purchase twice. If you split the difference, US$140 might be a good selling price. This is just one way of thinking about it.

I was going to sell it as a fixed price on a forum, and still may…
Now you have me thinking, maybe I’ll try ebay and start near/under the price you calculated and see if people bid on it.

    Thanks again.

You’re welcome. If you sell on eBay make sure you say that these are original discs (there are a LOT of pirate copies on eBay) and that you can upgrade to the latest version. This will entice people to buy for that purpose. Also if you say that you checked with Sony about transferring the license are are ready to transfer to the winning bidder, people know that you have a legitimate copy. Buying software on eBay is very scary because of all the pirate copies so anything you can say to make the buyer understand that this is a legitimate copy will help differentiate you from the pirates selling copies at $15. Good luck,

Just to add another question to this interesting topic: everytime I upgrade to a new version of Vegas pro, I’m remaining with the old version which is never used anymore. Would Sony allow me to give away the “old” version to somebody else? Because I believe that version 8 and 9 are still very usable for many friends.
