I have been editing using a simple 13″ tube TV as an external viewing device. Saturday it went kaput, to keep working I hooked up to a 13″ 720P HD TV and I was amazed at how different the picture looked. The photos in the project looked great, but the video didn’t look as good as it did on the tube TV. Everything seemed much more contrasty. I’m not sure what to do from here as far as the future. Color is not real critical for me because most of my work is outdoor high school sports (not HD). But, I am alarmed at how different the picture looked from what I had been used to seeing. What is recommended for external viewing? Price is an issue for me as I don’t have lots to invest in an expensive monitor. If most homes have or are going to have HD TV’s should I use an HD TV for my external monitor & correct to that?
    Ant thoughts are much appreciated.

    Thanks
    Dave P.

I use a LCD HDTV as my second monitor and it works great. Does you computer have a second display adapter VGA out? Thats how I connect my laptop. My desktop has 2 DVI outs so I use a DVI to hdmi cable to connect that one too. Danny Hays

Hi Danny, thanks for your response.
I have two monitors hooked up to my computer and my external monitor (3rd monitor) is hooked up through a Canopus ADVC110. Right now that 3rd hookup is to a Sylvania LCD TV (link below)https://www.sylvaniaconsumerelectronics.com/products/lcd/LC155SC8.php
Am I on the right track going this route? Does the resolution of the LCD TV make a big difference for this?

    Thanks

I gather your editing standard definition so the new TV has better resolution than the video. 720 x 480. I think what you might be seeing that you don’t like is the interlacing. Like a combed edge of things that move fast. Interlaced video looks good on a crt tv due to the phosphor glow takes a bit to fade so the interlacing can make the video look smoother, not so jumpy. An LCD TV shows the interlacing very well. Try going to your project settings and setting the interlace settings to none “Progressive”. If you like the way it looks better there’s a setting for this in the render settings too. Yes I think it’s a move in the right direction as LCD TVs are more popular than ever but there are still crts out there. It’s still good to see what it’ll look on one too. Danny Hays

Thanks for the suggestions, I will give them a try.
Would it be better to view on a 1080P monitor since most people (I would think) will be going this route in the future?

    Thanks

Until you are outputing 1920 x 1080P video you are not seeing what the monitor will produce. But if you were to purchace a HDTV, I would spring for 1920 x 1080P as their coming down in price and anything less will be atiquated shortly. Plus plug your computer into one and use it for your monitor just one time. You’ll love it. The HDTV’s now days have so many inputs that you can plug in tons of things into it at once and use the remote to switch between them.
