Exporting DVCPRO HD P2 footage for VFX Post Production issues, concerns
Hi community,
I have a film that will be needing lots of compositing work because it was shot on green screen, so I am preparing to send the footage to the artists, but I am not too familiar with the appropriate settings/formats for export.
I know Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 has the tools for chroma keying, but my computer isn’t powerful enough to do the full compositing job that the project demands, so I just used Premiere Pro CS4 to edit the footage, then export, and will be having artists take over the workload.
The artists prefer to have the native resolution, and color, which is understandable, but I don’t want to have to send the MXF files, because the file sizes are so large, and I’m not sure if they’d be able to open the format on their editing software.
I am aware of using Targas, and Tiffs, and am thinking of using these formats, since Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 does NOT export Cineon DPX.
My MXF footage is 960×720 1.333 aspect ratio 23.976 fps
The Interpret Footage settings on the MXF clips are set to “Use from File”
My Project settings Capture at HDV
My Sequence settings at P2 720p 60Hz DVCPROHD 23.976 timebase, 24fps timecodeJust as a test I exported a Tiff sequence at HD Anamorphic 1.3 Tiff 720p 23.97 fps trying to match the settings of the MXF originals.
I imported the Tiff sequence back into the project, but it didn’t match the length of the same clip that it was exported from. The Tiff image sequence appears as 29.97fps rather than the 23.97 it was exported as, shorter than the MXF clip.
The only way to get the imported Tiff Sequence to match the length of the MXF in the project is to interpret the tiff footage as 23.97.
Which leaves me wondering, why the 23.97 does not appear as such when importing.
I did another test with exporting the same Tiff Sequence, but as 29.97. I Imported this to the project, and it matched the MXF clip exactly with no intrepreting footage. Does that mean the MXF clips in my project are actually 29.97 and not 23.97?
Also with regards to aspect ratio, in my project the 1.333 MXF footage appears correct and stretched image wise, while the tiff sequence with the same 1.333 aspect ratio appears squished, again I have to interpret footage to set it to HD anamorphic.
Why are the interpret footage settings upon import, incorrect?
Should I send the VFX artists 960×720 1.333 aspect ratio footage, or send them square pixel 1280×720 1.0 footage to work with. I’m assuming the former.
Lastly, going back to targas or tiffs, which one offers 10bit color. This is a concern of the vfx artists.
Thanks, hope i was clear in explaining my dilemma.
Any advice, or tips would be appreciated.
