Wee see this same post more often than we could have ever dreamed.
There are two likely answers: You’re applying effects to the clip in the Browser, not the one in the timeline, or, you have a severely corrupted machine. The latter is most unlikely. The former is easier to mess up than you might think.

    Hi David,
No it is on the timeline that I applied the effects. I tried some more stuff, trashed the preferences and also tried on another project. Turns out that with the other project everything woks OK. But not on this specific one. It was shot with a Sony XD Cam and I used XD Cam transfer to capture the shots. I am not too familiar with XD Cam. Could it be that I did something wrong there??

David, I’ll make it even stranger: when I apply an effect in that particular project to a clip IN the browser, it works!! If I do it in the timeline it doesn’t!!!

Me stupid again. It was one of the settings of the timeline. In the playback and render controls, I didn’t have ‘filter’ checked…..

Thanks for closing your thread with a viable solution, hardly anyone ever does that around here.
and welcome to the “Doh! Club.” We’re all members in good standing although some of us simply refuse to admit our mistakes.

Actually it is a very comforting thought that a lot of problems have very simple solutions. You only have to find out which one it is.
