  • Editing 4k from GH4 in Premier Pro CC?

    Hello bovine friends,

I’m contemplating dipping my toe into 4k waters and really like the look of the Panasonic GH4 and when released, possibly mating it to the upcoming Atomos Shogun 4k recorder/monitor. I currently use an AF-100 with a Atomos Samurai and really like the workflow.

That said, I have not had the opportunity to play with 4k media in post and most likely don’t know what i don’t know… so any advise or gotchas would be welcomed.

My current post environment includes 3 Mac pro towers:

    • Edit One – 12 core w/ 32g ram and an aging Kona 3 card. Monitoring via SDI tp Panasonic BT-LH2600w.
    • Edit Two – 12 core w/ 32g ram and a Kona LHi card. Monitoring via component analog HD to Panasonic ?
    • Edit Three – 4 core w/ 16g. No AJA card. No monitoring (just the computer displays)

Storage to all three suites is via gigabit ethernet with a Bob Zelin built shared storage array and provides up to 600MB per sec of total throughput.

I would like to be able to work with 4k footage in both Edit One and Edit Two.

    Hardware Questions:

    • I assume that I would need to upgrade to newer Kona Cards
    • For the time being, would I need to upgrade my HD monitors to 4k, or can I continue to use the HD monitoring for the time being?

    Workflow Questions:

    • How is working with 4K in Premiere? Any performance issues?
    • I suspect that a significant portion of the time, the use of 4k is to allow me the option to reframe shots (i.e. punch in) and still deliver in HD. Any issues in Premiere?
    • Any comparisons about output/export times for 4k vs 1080?

What else should I be asking, that I am not thinking about?

Production is fun – but lets not forget: Nobody ever died on the video table!

[Steve Martin] “I assume that I would need to upgrade to newer Kona Cards”

Yes. Neither of those will output nor deal with 4K. You’ll need either the Kona 3G, Kona 4…or as a thunderbolt option, the AJA Io4K.

[Steve Martin] “For the time being, would I need to upgrade my HD monitors to 4k, or can I continue to use the HD monitoring for the time being?”

The Kona cards will convert the 4K signal to 1080, so you can still see your image, and even color correct for it. The color space isn’t different. And if you want to see all the pixels, the Kona cards can be configured to show you sectors…there are 4 quadrants you can focus on…for pixel to pixel viewing. But a 4K monitor isn’t vital.

Do you intend to upgrade those? I’d seriously consider that if you intend to work with 4K at full res.
