  • DVCPro HD show editied in FCP – Client wants to finish on Avid

Please note – also posted to Avid forum, looking for “bilingual” Avid/FCP experts…

I am co-producing a doc for TV. We shot and edited in DVCPro HD in Final Cut Pro. The client wants to do the final edit at their facilities on the East Coast (we’re in San Francisco) and prefers to use their HD Avid system and editor. What difficulties should we expect if we show up with our Quicktime wrapped DVCPro HD files on a 1.5TB drive and the FCP rough-cut edit to turn over for finishing?

I am not yet aware of what specific Avid system they use other than it is HD capable and the client is a major cable network. Would it make any difference what Avid system is used?

BTY current format is 720p 23.97 (primarily from Varicam)

Go to the Automatic Duck website and look at the workflow to get from FCP to Avid. We do the same thing here, only in reverse, Avid Projects finish on our HD system.

Most likely they will have to recapture all the material to an Avid native codec but by using the Duck, this is done very easily.

IOW, they’ll need both your FCP project file and the original source tapes, but not your DVCPro HD media files on disk.

I’ve been told by several folks that Avid will recognize QuickTime DVCPRO-HD files just fine. But I’ve not actually done it.

That’s interesting. You know I’ll try a test right now and let you guys know what happens.

To clarify, I was told Edius (Grassvalley) and Avid recognize QT DVCPRO-HD, even though QT in Windows doesn’t have the codec. This is second hand, I don’t know this for sure. So don’t flame me if I’m wrong.

Nope, no flaming here. Now this is a Windows Avid system we’ll be testing with, but at least we’ll know for sure on that one. I uploaded a 10 second DVCPro HD clip for a colleague who edits with an Adrenaline on Windows to see if she can read it. It will be very cool if it works and no biggie if it doesn’t.

It did not work for me in January! AVID (windows) could not see the files.

  • That is incorrect. Avid will happily read MXF files from, say, an HVX200, and that may be what the person who told you this is talking about. The Quicktime DVCPro HD codec was written by Apple, and is only available on the Mac – and then, only when you have installed either Final Cut Pro or Shake.

It’s easy to get confused today about what codecs different programs and platforms support, especially when the same codec is supported on multiple platforms but under totally different circumstances and in totally different file formats. The only way I know of that any Avid system could access DVCProHD Quicktime files would be for the Avid program to be on a Mac that also has Final Cut installed. In that case, the Avid program should be able to read the Quicktime files and import them into Avid compatible MXF’s.

Actually, Windows Avids will import 720p DVCPROHD files captured on an FCP system, but you have to first add a .MOV extension to the QT files. QT Windows will not recognize the codec nor display video in the player, but the Avid software will see this as a valid file and import and rewrap the file as Avid media. This has worked on Xpress Pro since version 5 (PC). Should also work on MC Soft and MCA. However, it won’t carry over any TC or Reel # values, as the Avid will now see this as any other graphic/animation file.

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

Many thanks to all who responded and commented. The client finally saw the light and arranged for a FCP studio which should solve any issues, but the expertise in this forum is impressive. You are all a great resource.
