Is there any reason that SD DV and HDV video could not be synced? Everything was shot at 29.97.

    Here is the situation:
I have a project with two tracks of SD DV video and one track of HDV video. The two SD DV tracks sync perfectly with each other while. When the audio from the HDV is synced with the audio from the SD the HD picture is out of sync with the other video tracks. If the HD picture is in sync with the SD picture then the HD audio is out of sync. All video was shot at 29.97 with 48hz audio. I recaptured the HDV as SD DV and this solved the problem. I would like to use the HDV in my SD project to allow for framing adjustment but I can’t figure this out. I don’t think my balding scalp can take anymore scratching. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

So the HDV Video is out of sync with the HDV Audio?
So sometimes HDV video is captured and it’s out of sync. No idea why it just happens sometimes.
I have noticed this more often with HDV capture using HDVSplit AND I have noticed it more in CS4 than I did in CS3.

If the sync is out the same amount all the time than you can manually re-sync it and then all should be well. If it drifts out of sync over time, then you are really in trouble.

I am presuming the Audio on the HDV tape is distinct from what’s on the DV tapes and can’t just be thrown way.

Hi David. Thanks for your response.
You are right the HDV audio is distinct. However the HD video and audio are synced with each other but drift in relation to the DV material. I noticed a few dropped frames in the HDV clips which could explain the drift. At least everything is good when I down convert the HDV on capture.

I am using a USB 2.0 SATA drive as my media drive. Could a data bottle neck cause the dropped frames in the HDV and/or the sync issues? Thanks again.

Nope – it’s not the drive. I’ve edited hundreds of hours of DV and HDV on USB drives and never had a problem – until CS4 (I blame the Mainconcepts Codecs I think I read somewhere Adobe switched to – just wish I could confirm that so I could complain about it.)

Since you’ve captured it both ways, does the DV capture Audio stay in sync withe HDV capture Video? If yes then just sync those and use that as your HD source.

The DV capture audio does not stay in sync with the HD. It looks like the project will stay in SD. Thanks for your help David.
