I’m relatively new to Final Cut Pro, so this may be basic knowledge to most.

I have need to export movies, up to an hour in length, to composers, sound designers, etc. If I use a DVD, i have to compress a QT file, a v long process. I want to get an inexpensive but RELIABLE firewire drive that can transport uncompressed files back and forth. I’ve looked at the LaCie 80GB and 250 GB drives, but the customer reviews are terrible– users complaining of drives that quit. What do you all use? What do you recommend? I need to buy one today. Thanks.

For some reason Lacie gets a bad rap.
I’ve heard VERY bad stories and I’ve heard people reply that they’ve never had troubles with them.
My personal experience has been very good with Lacie.
I use them for my home business (video editing) and at my day job (video editing).
I had once instance were a drive went bad on me, but Lacie replaced it with no hassles and I ended up only being out digitizing time. All harddrives will fail eventually!

If your only desire is to transport already edited projects, I think most any firewire drive will work for you.
Lets see how many Lacie Horror stories come out of this.

thats strange, i really like my lacie drives. in fact, i have 3 of them. the 300gb lacie D2 is a nice drive equipped with firewire 800, which will obviously help with file transfers. Another thing i really like about them, is when hooked up to my Mac (dont know about PC) the drives turn on and off with the computer. its nicer than it sounds not having to shutoff everydrive everytime, or if you forget and leave it on all night. they also have plenty of connections, and can be RAID configured together. seems to stay fairly cool too.

relatedly, I’m wondering if the LaCie d2 Extreme 250G with triple interface will be enough drive to manage my FCP captured media. my old LaCie is struggling, so i’m wary. someone else recommended i get a Granite Digital drive instead. anyone have any opinion? or is there a better drive? the LaCie is far cheaper than the Granite, so i’d like for it to work, of course.

also, i have a brand new MBP, and i wonder if the lack of FW800 is going to be a problem for FCP.

    thanks
