  • dragging transitions to time line

OK, I’m a noob..not to editing, but with final cut pro. I can’t seem to be able to drag a transition to either the time line or canvas. right or left click drag doesn’t work…mouse just stays as a pointer. Is this a setting issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Jon

Where are you dragging from? The Effects tab of the Browser? You can’t drag to the Canvas. That’s just a visual display. You can only drag it to the timeline onto an edit point.

Can’t drag, or can’t apply the transition? Are you aware that you cannot apply a transition to a clips without handles on both side of the cut? If that is too basic for level of expertise I apologize.

One more time, you can’t drag it from where? Where exactly are you dragging it to? You can’t just drag a transition into the timeline window drop it anywhere and expect it to work. Please tell us exactly what you’re doing.

    All the best,

what I used to do in Premier was capture a 7-9 minute clip and use a blade tool to cut it up in the time line, then just add transitions…i’m trying to do the same thing in FCP and can’t drag a transition between two cut clips in the time line, jon

Can’t do that. You have no head on the incoming clip or tail on the outgoing clip. You need to have extra media on each end of the clips to perform the transitions.

You can look this up in the FCP Manual by clicking on “Help” Menu and searching Transitions.

If you blade a shot and then put a transition on it, like say a cross dissolve, you’re dissolving from a shot back to itself. You won’t see anything.

When you say you can’t drag, do you mean the transition doesn’t move, from wherever you’re trying to drag it, or it has no effect when you drag it somewhere? Where exactly are you dragging it to, an edit point, or somewhere else? Please be as clear as you can. We cannot see your computer. We’re entirely reliant on your description. Everybody else can drag a transition from the Effects tab of the Browser or from the Viewer and place it on an edit point with enough handles on each side and produce a transition.

thanks 4 all your help guys…did finally figure it out{you have to double click between clips to activate the transitions. I’m sure I’ll be back with more dumb questions, thanks again, jon

Double clicking on an edit point should open the trim edit window. You do not need to double click on an edit point, nor even to select it, you simply need to place the transition on it.

hey tom, you seem like the guy to answer my question. first, i am experiencing the unrendered problem in the canvas as well in FCE 4.01. i read your other blogs saying to match my settings, but when i did that it still wont work. i get only the audio, and not the video playing back. this is completely opposite from most posts i have read, and even video tutorials. i have a canon vixia hf m30 camera.

second, the browser will not let me drag and drop into the timeline. the clips wont drag, but also the effects wont either. all the tutorials i have seen show to drag the clips and effects into the timeline to enable them to be edited. please help as soon as possible. i am under a very strict deadline for work. thank you very much
