Disable Resample – by default
Posted by James Houghtaling on March 9, 2014 at 9:26 pmWhenever I change the speed of a clip I have to remember to go into “Properties” and check “Disable resample.” I can’t think of an instance where I wanted to keep it on. It doesn’t do a good job improving either slow motion or sped up video.
So I’m wondering is there a hidden setting that would check “Disable resample” by default? It’s a real pain and a few more keystrokes to have to change every clip.

March 9, 2014 at 9:38 pmI don’t know of a way to have it set on every project, but you can do it more quickly by doing it on one event, copying that event, then highlighting all the events you want to disable resample on, right click one of them, and select “Paste Event Attributes”, and it will disable it on all of them.
Keep in mind this will copy all event properties you’ve changed, so if your first event has a different playback speed than another one, it will alter that and add plugins you have on your first one like color corrector.

You want to keep it on for it’s original purpose which was to go from 29.970 to 23.976 or from 23.976 to 29.970 back in the say when those where the only two frame rates that matter in the NTSC world. For those of us who are not shooting 60p, Disable Resample works just fine. I’ve never turned it off.

March 10, 2014 at 1:07 amAngelo, John, thanks for the feedback. I am familiar with the paste event attributes but my workflow never includes filling up the timeline with events where I could simply cut and paste attributes. I place events one at a time and tweak them as I go.
John, when I use velocity envelope or otherwise slow or speed up an event, if I don’t turn off resample I get distracting ghosting and/or blended frames. I’d rather just see a clean crisp frame. So if there’s a way to turn it off by default for all frames regardless, that’s what I’d do. If I understand it correctly, it doesn’t even come into play if the event’s frame rate is the same as the render right?

March 10, 2014 at 1:24 amThere is no way to turn it off by default that I know of and you are correct, it doesn’t do anything if the frame rate matches the render. It is purely to blend frames when changing frame rates.
I see from your signature that you have VASST Ultimate S (thank you). You could use Ultimate S to turn disable resample on and off for any group of events with a single click. Go to the Visual Effects tab and use the Video Event Properties tool to change any number of properties (including disable resample) on any selected events.

March 10, 2014 at 6:14 amCurrently, there is no such option in Vegas. But you can easily switch off this option for selected events:
1) Use any available method to select all video events
2) Right click on any selected event and choose Switches > Disable Resample -

March 10, 2014 at 7:04 amThis is possible with extension programming as I already have this working with my Black Tools extension. With each project you can set what new events will default to for Loop, Resample, and Maintain Aspect Ratio. It requires a bit of infrastructure, though. For the programming guns wishing to go down the road here is a little road map.
On project open catalog all events. (For extremely large projects this takes a few seconds more but it is not too bad.)
On event count change modify any event not found in the catalog and then add to the catalog. In Black Tools you can even set the option to ignore Split Events (it works by checking to see if the new event added is in direct relation to its predecessor on the track.)
It would be nice if Sony would just include a default event state option.

July 21, 2015 at 8:25 pmHi John,
To be honest I disable resample on every film . I can record at 50fps and create a 25fps project. If I leave smart resample on it is awful when rendered…you can see the blurred frames that vegas is trying to create. When disabled it is far crisper. I have no idea why there is no function to turn it off by default, I too find it a pain having to disable all my events in turn. Thanks

I like the OP thought it (resample) was a worthless feature, but when I looked at the Sony Red car GPU benchmark project I noticed that there were two clips in slomo with smart resample, and they look nice and smooth. The Project is 1080p30 and one clip was 1080p30 and the other 1080i60. Both clips were .632 playback speed. So it can and does work, but of course not for everything.
SCS can improve the Smart in Smart resampling, and they should probably give a preference for global disable and default it as current.

The bigger question is why would you recored 50fps if you are delivering 25fps? Shooting 25fps should solve your problem.

I would put in a Product Suggestion. If you don’t ask for it, they won’t know you want it. Those of us who shoot at the same frame rate that we deliver don’t have this problem so it never bothered me.
